About this listen

During a bone-chilling snap of record cold weather, a series of enigmatic drowning deaths play out in a small summer resort community on Long Island's Shinnecock Bay. Quickly implicated in the death is a local college professor named Deacon Kane, himself recovering from the accidental drowning death of his only son years ago - recovering slowly, and with the help of alcohol and an addictive, messy affair with a married woman.

As the police and several other interested parties watch his every move, Kane befriends a hypnotically alluring bartender named Collette and quickly continues his brutal downward spiral with little regard for self-preservation. Whether and how Kane is connected to the young victims are the questions everyone wants answered. And as it becomes clear that Kane himself may not know the extent of his own involvement, all must admit that something dark and sinister is at work in Southhampton.

Daniel Judson has a virtuoso's touch and an uncanny ability to layer suspense, plot, and character study into an engrossing and completely surprising crime novel that will not soon be forgotten.

The Darkest Place

The journey through life takes extreme turns for these people ! Some turned a negative into a positive!! Some turned a negative into evil!! And one tuned his downward spiral totally around by a life changing moment when I think he became the man he was meant to be!!

Well Done

I enjoyed this book. A real who done it with lots of twists and turns along the way that kept me guessing. A fair amount of cringe worthy parts (not a bad thing). Absolutely Great performance by Dick Hill who is now on my short list of favorite narrators.

Excellent reading on the Audible Version

This was a very interesting story once I got far enough into it. Unfortunately the initial presentation of the characters in the story make them all pretty unlikable at first. Once I got far enough into the plot to feel some sympathy for the characters, it improved for me, and I was able to enjoy the rest of it. The plot is definitely not easy to figure out, and that is great! Not a formula read, for sure. The quality, descriptive prose of the writer is definitely a cut above the typical murder mystery of late. By the time I was finished, I was very interested in the characters, and where they might go from here. I can see me looking for more books by this author.

Narration

This is the work of a wonderful narrator. Thank you for a voice that turns a story to a full and rich experience.

Really good crime fiction

This writer was a new one for me. His style is noir. The story kept me interested all the way through. I figured out who the villain was before the end but the journey was well worth it. I am going to definitely look for more of this author.

WHAT??

The audio on this was absolutely horrible!!!!!!! This narrator has way to much variation in his voice tone. When traveling it's nearly impossible to hear what he is saying.
