Publisher's summary

For Caleb Hicks, survival means hiding in plain sight.

Trained from a young age to be a super-soldier, he has worked hard to keep his abilities hidden. But after a disastrous mistake forces him into military service, hiding his skills becomes increasingly difficult. To maintain his cover, he isolates himself, rarely speaking and discussing his past with no one.

Until now.

After finding love in the wake of catastrophe, he will finally reveal the secrets of his childhood, his training, and the tragic events of his life following the Outbreak. Packed with intense action, thrills, and suspense, The Darkest Place is a harrowing tale of love, loss, and survival against all odds.

And ultimately, of the enduring power of hope.

Great character development!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes. If you like this series you will love this book. Small spoiler alert. This is a current/back story and at first I hated it as I already had the primary characters in my head. After letting it run I was hooked! Well done without being to far fetched.
Really made this character tangible!

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Darkest Place?

It would be a spoiler so I will just say this book provokes a great deal of thought and emotion.

What does Guy Williams bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Not sure how to answer that as reading is still the best way to experience a book, that being said. Guy Williams does an excellent job.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

A number of them actually which was surprising.

Any additional comments?

Well done. I would say this is the best story/back story tie in of any series I have read.

A bit of a non-sequitur...

as 90% of the book is the backstory of Caleb Hicks. A good story with lots of new characters, most of whom don't make it. I'm not giving away the ending, as the Hicks makes it clear throuhout the telling of his story, that it doesn't end well.

Great series

Liked the background story of Caleb Hicks. Guy Williams does a very good narration, so don't replace him!

Better than the last book

So glad the original narrator was back to read this book. Much better than the last book. Glad I didn't give up on the series. However, Mr. James Cook needed to do a tad bit more research on firearms. It was stated that a character used a
380 revolver? How about a .38 caliber or .38 special. I'm not saying a .380 revolver doesn't exist but it is a rare thing indeed, not something that would be common in a zombie apocalypse. But .38 caliber revolvers or .380 automatic pistols are a dime a dozen.
Even though this story centered more on the zombie apocalypse and not a paramilitary war epic ( of which I was glad to see ) I still think the story has way to many primary characters. Really wish the story would remain focused on Gabe and Eric. But overall this one was very good. I did feel so sorry for Hicks.
