About this listen

Tres has taken a short term teaching job at the University of Texas at Austin. He is living with his brother Garrett, a computer wizard, and enjoying this easy assignment. But when Garrett’s business partner is murdered, Tres must switch from professor to detective.

As Tres delves into Garrett's bizarre world to find the truth behind the murder, he comes face-to-face with the damaged relationships, violent lives, and billion-dollar schemes of a brave new high-tech world. Among the players: a corporate takeover artist with a trail of broken enemies in his wake and an overzealous desire to make Garrett's company his own; the victim's wife, a hard-edged beauty haunted by three generations of family failure; and the head of an oil-rich clan with more power than morals and enough skeletons in the closet to man a ghost ship. Connecting them all - the beautiful waters of Lake Travis and an unspeakable evil that lies within its depths.

Rick Riordan, teacher, Texan, and multiple award-winner, creates a masterful mixture of local color and mystery in each Tres Navarre novel.

Tom Stechschulte captures the essence of the characters. It sounds like it's a different person talking. A particular character always gave me chills with how deep and terrifying the voice was. He is phenomenal, and the story's great too. This book is probably my favorite at this time.

Amazing Voice Work

Another great Tres Navarre story

So far I have loved listening to this series. Each book can stand on it own and it is very well researched and written. I stumbled upon this series after I finished the other Percy Jackson series and was pleasantly surprised. Well with the one credit.

Super fun listen.

If you could sum up The Devil Went Down to Austin in three words, what would they be?

You won't see the end coming.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Tres, of course. Though Maya is pretty interesting and in this novel, the brother Garrett gains depth.

Which scene was your favorite?

Jimmy Buffett and motorcycles. To say more would be a spoiler.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Maya confronting her fears. Who knew she had fears?

Any additional comments?

This is the third in the series and I've enjoyed all of them. A private eye who happens to teach medieval literature is a pretty creative character. This book combines scuba diving and computer programming. The scuba stuff is explained better than the coding stuff, but you can follow most of it. It might have been easier to read rather than listen because of the random emails that pop up and are unexplained at the time. But overall I liked it a lot.

it's a nice series the author has a fairly good plot not my favorite so far but his reoccurring characters all seem to have an appreciation for each other and show some growth. the performances excellent and the narrator does a good job of differentiating all the characters

another good story in the series

Loved it. Nice twist at the end that wasn't predictable. Rick Riordan writes with vivid details and descriptions of the locations and intertwines the characters with the places described. He really makes you fall in love with all of them.

Very good storytelling

Miss use a Spanish word pronunciation. Don’t care for the teacher job and bull about topics they discuss

Humor and story

It is too rough for me to enjoy when the writer decides to share the killer’s point of view.

Not a fan of hearing the thoughts in the killer’s head
