Publisher's summary

During the Lenten season of 1823, a German nun experienced a series of ecstatic visions that transported her to Jerusalem on the eve of the Last Supper. This is her compelling visionary account of the events surrounding Jesus' final days. A primary source for Mel Gibson's epic movie The Passion of the Christ.

Critic reviews

"Franklin may have used history as a starting point, but he imagines the events in human terms, creating a book that transmutes historical fact into something much more powerful, dramatic and compelling." ( Publishers Weekly)

the emotion

The reader's connection to the topic, the emotion conveyed through the words brought me to an emotional place, sorrow, shame, anger, unrelenting pain, and the need to stop them surfaced and remained through the book.. then the resurrection and the joy, exaltation, and surety of faith in and for a living ,merciful, loving Jesus who saved us. The Father, The Son, and The Holy Spirit made themselves known and were present throughout. I love it and all the empty places it filled..

The reader gets in the way

I listen to this every Lent and Holy Week, but had to move to a different narrator. Roger Basick is overly dramatic, and his Latin is frankly execrable. It really gets in the way.

Such a beautiful and edifying listen

This reading greatly affected me and helped me understand more the sufferings of our Lord and how a pious nun united herself with him. May we all grow close to our Lord as she did.
