Publisher's summary

Gianna believes manual labor to be penance for the mistake that changed her life. Nothing can be worse than serving probation under the supervision of a bitter, elderly woman, known as the Caretaker, running a bed and breakfast in the middle of the Arizona desert.

Then the strangers begin arriving. They appear every night at sundown at the end of the driveway and vanish early in the morning, armed men and women who don't quite look or act normal and never travel in vehicles, despite the property being 20 miles from town. Where they come from baffles Gianna, as does the single rule the Caretaker gives her. The front door must remain unlocked and the house accessible to the dangerous visitors no matter how unusual or frightening they are.

When one of them arrives wounded, Gianna helps save him and unknowingly makes a powerful friend, one from a very faraway place. In fact, from another world entirely, the world that starts at the end of the driveway. Before she can learn more, Gianna is left alone with the strangers and must choose whether she'll take over the Caretaker's role as hostess or return to New York and risk jail time for violating her probation.

Frustrated with her life, Gianna defies the Caretaker and locks the front door instead.

Her world will never be the same.

I'm not sure what didn't click for me?

The story begins with a survivor of an assault that ends in the death of her attacker. Now, she’s under house arrest, wearing an ankle monitor, and assigned to a work detail at a peculiar bed and breakfast, where she’s helping an elderly woman. Oh, and did I mention she's also a teen with a history of murder and a major attitude problem?

As a fan of true crime, the plot just doesn't add up. From a woman's perspective, it’s even harder to wrap my head around. To make matters worse, the narrator’s portrayal of the protagonist as a moody, clipped teenager makes her even more difficult to connect with or enjoy.

I typically enjoy this author’s work, but this one just didn’t sit right with me.

Awesome Audio

Great audio version. Had to speed up the performance by one setting, but other than that it was fantastic. Love the book, and reviewed it on Amazon.

A good story....

I liked the narrator and I loved the characters in this story. There's something about Gianna and Teyan that left me wanting the rest of their story. Gianna has two options and she chooses to live with the Caretaker. She hates it but it's the better option and she slowly learns what being a Caretaker involves. However, there's one important rule and Gianna learns why that rule should never be broken. This was a good story but I found it a little slow. This story ends with a cliffhanger and I'm excited to read what happens next.
