About this listen
Now includes The Lost Chapters, four previously unpublished chapters with author commentary and editor notes!
Aidan Thomas is miserable. And it's much more than the strange nightmares he's been having. Just when life seemed to be coming together for Aidan, his parents suddenly move the family across the country to take care of his wheelchair-bound grandfather. When strange events begin to occur, Aidan is drawn into his grandfather's basement where he discovers three ancient scrolls and an invitation to another world.
No longer confined to the realm of his own imagination, Aidan embarks on an adventure where he joins them in the struggle between good and evil. With the fate of two worlds hanging in the balance, Aidan faces Paragory, the eternal enemy. Will Aidan be willing to risk everything and trust the unseen hand of the one true king?
The answer comes from The Door Within.
This new edition of The Door Within is designed like the director's cut DVDs of favorite movies and includes deleted chapters, extended scenes, author and editor commentary, and even new bonus adventure stories written especially for fans.
What to expect in The Door Within, Lost Chapters Edition:
- Deleted Chapter: Original Chapter 1, where Aidan learns that his family will leave their lifetime home in Maryland to move to Colorado. And something startling happens in Aidan's room.

The difference in their uncanny eyes could not be easily discerned. In the rays of the setting sun, both Aravel's and Morlan's eyes appeared gold. In the pale moonlight...yellow. Seemingly the same. Such inscrutable likeness is the way of things with identical twins. But all who knew the two brothers well noted unmistakable differences, peculiarities more experienced than seen.

Story
The Seven succeeding Elven Lords of Allyra were dead, lost in the Siege of Berinfell as babes. At least that’s what everyone thought until tremors from a distant world known as Earth, revealed strange signs that Elven blood lived among its peoples. With a glimmer of hope in their hearts, sentinels are sent to see if the signs are true. But theirs is not a lone errand. The ruling warlord of Allyra, the Spider King, has sent his own scouts to hunt down the Seven and finish the job they failed to complete many ages ago.

Story
Even though she's only 12 years old, Lily McKinley already feels the weight of the world's brokenness. She's seen it in her mother's exhaustion, her grandmother's illness, and the cruelty of Adam, the bully at her school. But most tragically, she experienced it two months ago when her father died in a terrible accident. As an artistic daydreamer, Lily has a brilliant imagination to help her cope, but that imagination often gets her into trouble. One day, it transports her to a fantasy world called the Somnium Realm, where her father's secret history embroils her in an epic quest.

Story
The kids at school call Billy "Dragon Breath" for good reason. His breath is bad! It isn't the normal, morning-mouth bad; it's the hot-as-fire, "don't-you-dare-get-near-me" bad. And hearing "Dragon Breath" ringing in his ears, he constantly tries to cool his oral volcano. Trouble erupts when his hot breath sets off the fire sprinklers in the boys' restroom at school, and his parents learn that they've kept their secret for too long. Billy finally discovers the secret. His father was once a dragon!

enjoyable adventure
This story was very entertaining. I enjoyed the bit which is allegorical, the plot was engaging, and I liked that I couldn't always tell what was going to come next.
Wayne Batson did a good job narrating and he changed his voice enough for all the different characters that it was easy to follow who was talking without having to be starting to listen for names.
I definitely going to check out book 2.

For those who like their stories clear
The Door Within is for those who like their allegories a little less subtle than Narnia. One could call it a modern child's mystery play or morality play (like Pilgrim's Progress); not sure which is more accurate. Stories that depend on one character, in this case Aidan, are apt to devolve into mere travelogues no matter how many dragons and mountain/forest/cave monsters are fought. Like all such stories, there be spiders there.

Story excellent, mediocre narration
I really like this author and all his stories. However, his narration doesn’t do the book justice. I’m really sad to say that. He does his best, but it’s not that good. It’s quite confusing and a little hokey, but if you can push through, it gets better as you kind of get used to it.
I’m really hoping book 2 has a professional narrator! I’ll still buy it though but it would be nice for him to have this book redone professionally.

Excellent world building creativity
Usually, when I read that the author is reading his own book, I am leery. Barton, like Brian Jacques of the Redwall series, fleshes out each character so well, they come to life. I also enjoyed the vast creativity of the author's other world. Read and enjoy. You will have a hard time putting it down.

Decent but has issues
If I had listened to this book as a pre-tween, I probably would have loved it. As it stands, the religious allegory is too in-your-face. It’s like a B movie remake of Chronicles of Narnia, written by a middle schooler. It also bothers me that the main character acts/speaks like a five-year-old for the first half of the book, then like an adult - never like an actual teenager.
On a positive note… I normally avoid books narrated by the author (because they usually do it when they can’t afford to hire a narrator, and most of them do a poor job of it) but in this case the author has done a pretty decent job with narration.
