Prosper is the only unexceptional Redding in his old and storied family history - that is until he discovers the demon living inside him. Turns out Prosper's great-great-great-great-great-something grandfather made - and then broke - a contract with a malefactor, a demon who exchanges fortune for eternal servitude. And, weirdly enough, 4,000-year-old Alastor isn't exactly the forgiving type. The fiend has reawakened with one purpose - to destroy the family whose success he ensured and who then betrayed him.
With only days to break the curse and banish Alastor back to the demon realm, Prosper is playing unwilling host to the fiend, who delights in tormenting him with nasty insults and constant attempts to trick him into a contract. Yeah, Prosper will take his afterlife without a side of eternal servitude, thanks. But with the help of his long-lost uncle, Barnabas, and his daughter, Nell, a witch in training, it seems like Prosper has at least a fighting chance of ridding himself of Alastor before the demon escapes and wreaks havoc on his family. Little does Prosper know, the malefactor's control over his body grows stronger with each passing night, and there's a lot Alastor isn't telling his dim-witted (but admittedly strong-willed) human host.
From number one New York Times best-selling author Alexandra Bracken comes a tale of betrayal and revenge, of old hurts passed down from generation to generation. Can you ever fully right a wrong, ever truly escape your history? Or will Prosper and Alastor be doomed to repeat it?

The story is good, but a little predictable, and sometimes frustrating. It is hard to separate heavy-handed foreshadowing from getting angry with the characters for being so dense.
Charcter development is good but not great, but that is expected in a plot-driven story like this. The author created a flawed, but ultimately likeable hero in Prosper Redding.
Well written and an excellent performance

What made the experience of listening to The Dreadful Tale of Prosper Redding the most enjoyable?
The plot to me was complex in a way that most middle grade books aren't, and it was awesome! Bracken did a great job giving young readers a story that was written in a way that was easy to follow, but had a story line that could rival some YA novelsWhat was one of the most memorable moments of The Dreadful Tale of Prosper Redding?
Bracken went into great detail with this book, and I loved it. I am a reader who craves detail. I know that sometimes too much detail can feel like information overload, but I didn't feel like that in this book. I think she gave the right amount of detail to set the atmosphere she was striving to reach. It set up a Halloween atmosphere that I craved, and made the book come to life.Which character – as performed by Kirby Heyborne – was your favorite?
Alastor is hilarious and sassy, and if you need to know that's the way to my heart dear friends. He is high and mighty on his demon horse, and stares down on humans with his judging eyes. He doesn't understand why humans act human.Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
This book got me excited to read again. After having a personal tragedy in April I haven't been truly excited about anything reading wise. This book reminding me of how fun reading can be. You know that feeling when a book just makes you feel light and all your troubles melt away? Do you know when a book gives you joy and happiness like a little kid? This book gave me that again, and I will forever be grateful.I know we aren't suppose to like demons.
