About this listen

The acclaimed national and international bestseller

“Epic, romantic, and enthralling from start to finish.”—Stephanie Garber, #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Caraval series

“An all-consuming work of literary fantasy that is breathtaking both for its beauty and its suspense."—BookPage, starred review

A captivating and romantic debut epic fantasy inspired by the legend of the Chinese moon goddess, Chang’e, in which a young woman’s quest to free her mother pits her against the most powerful immortal in the realm.

Growing up on the moon, Xingyin is accustomed to solitude, unaware that she is being hidden from the feared Celestial Emperor who exiled her mother for stealing his elixir of immortality. But when Xingyin’s magic flares and her existence is discovered, she is forced to flee her home, leaving her mother behind.

Alone, powerless, and afraid, she makes her way to the Celestial Kingdom, a land of wonder and secrets. Disguising her identity, she seizes an opportunity to learn alongside the emperor’s son, mastering archery and magic, even as passion flames between her and the prince.

To save her mother, Xingyin embarks on a perilous quest, confronting legendary creatures and vicious enemies. But when treachery looms and forbidden magic threatens the kingdom, she must challenge the ruthless Celestial Emperor for her dream—striking a dangerous bargain in which she is torn between losing all she loves or plunging the realm into chaos.

Daughter of the Moon Goddess begins an enchanting duology which weaves ancient Chinese mythology into a sweeping adventure of immortals and magic, of loss and sacrifice—where love vies with honor, dreams are fraught with betrayal, and hope emerges triumphant.

Editor's Pick

A debut fantasy for mythology lovers
Daughter of the Moon Goddess* is at the intersection of all the things that mark my favorite stories: folkloric vibes, the promise of love, a great narrator, and a proactive main character. Inspired by the legend of Chang’e, the Chinese moon goddess, I was so intrigued to hear a story from the side of the divine. Despite being an immortal, Xingyin is not safe from danger or strife. I followed her journey with rapt attention as she learns to make a place for herself in the Celestial Kingdom while hiding her identity for fear of the wrath of the Celestial Emperor. Narrator Natalie Naudus’s performance is the kind where you immediately sink into the story. In short: the stakes are high, the love is deep, and the story is totally worth your time. I can’t wait to hear what Sue Lynn Tan has for us next. —Melissa B., Audible Editor

A Great Romantic Chinese Fantasy

The story was great. I picked this up because I've been watching Chinese fantasy/romance dramas and wanted to read a similar book. I loved the romance, and I found myself wanting to drive my car just to listen to this story. If you're not into YA Fantasy and Romance, you're not going to like it. But I felt it was fun and beautifully written. My only criticism was that the end of the novel felt pretty wrapped up, so I wasn't as eager to get to the sequel. But great story overall!

An Immaculate Masterpiece

This book is truly a masterpiece. I listened to it in Audible and I normally just listen to books on my short commute but once home I was just looking for chores to do so I could keep listening. I woke up in the mornings and the first thing I'd do is turn on the book to listen to while I got ready. I can't recommend this book enough, it's absolutely amazing. ♡♡♡

Very good story.

Very good adventure story, everything not what it seems. Even at the end there is a feeling that in the next book everything will be changed. Is a good guy good? Is the bad guy actually bad? Very good love triangle story. No spice, very good for kids.

Enjoyed this!

I love Chinese Fantasy and this was very satisfying. I would’ve liked to hear more personal thoughts from the emperor and especially the empress, as her temperament led me to wonder at her scalding reactions and almost constant aggressiveness. I also found the author’s over abundance of the phrase “something in me snapped” to be a bit redundant and worthy of the eye rolls that I began to find myself issuing. However, overall I very much enjoyed listening. The story was engaging and the characters were relatable. I loved the dragons and their descriptions. The battles were exciting and numerous enough to leave me quite happy with it. Definitely worth the credit if you are into this kind of fantasy fiction.
