About this listen

Harper Dupree has pinned all her hopes on a future in fashion design. But when it comes crashing down around her, she returns home to Fairhope, Alabama, and to Millie, the woman who first taught her how to sew. As Harper rethinks her own future, long-hidden secrets about Millie's past are brought to light.

In 1946, Millie Middleton - the daughter of an Italian man and a Black woman - boarded a train and left Charleston to keep half of her heritage hidden. She carried with her two heirloom buttons and the dream of owning a dress store. She never expected to meet a charming train jumper who changed her life forever...and led her yet again to a heartbreaking choice about which heritage would define her future.

Now, together, Harper and Millie return to Charleston to find the man who may hold the answers they seek...and a chance at the dress shop they've both dreamed of. But it's not until all appears lost that they see the unexpected ways to mend what frayed between the seams.

Love this book. I think we forgotten our history and I think we’ve forgotten how dark those times were. Thank you for bringing this to light and bringing Hope for the future.

History!

I enjoyed every aspect of this Audible book. The story is drawn from a part of America's history that I hadn't previously considered and is told in a way that never flinched from the bad, lent plausible mystery and suspense, and offered grace and hope for the future.

Excellent Historical Novel

The story was captivating and convicting. The flashbacks were an interesting way to bind the past with the future.

Captivated me

This was a captivating story. I was hanging onto the word for the next and the next. Then when there was mentioned the Gulf War - that put me back when we were stationed in the military and my husband was called to duty. The hardships and memories of where I was and he when things were happening. I will read this one again and look for more titles by Ashley Clark.

Ashley Clark writes beautifully in this book using very descriptive metaphors and similes to enrich the story.
The narrator was good, but sometimes I couldn't tell the voices apart.

Great writing, but a tad too long

I cannot tell you how much I adore this book.
Little "about me" before this review. I am not a very religious person, and I am very picky about my books. I love hearing about the love people have for their faith, however.

Now, for the review. This book is amazingly beautiful. The times that religion was placed into the book was written in such a way that made me happy and made me understand how close the author is to her faith.

The way she writes this story is very tactful and the book never feels like its dragging on.

I have listened to this book three times and read the physical copy once. You could say I am a BIG FAN.

I know it isn't for everyone, but if you check out the sample and are thinking about getting the book, please stop thinking and get yourself this beautiful tome in whatever format you prefer.

A beautiful book
