Publisher's summary

For lovely young Miss Patricia Patterson, life seemed a delightful dream - until the specter of her guardian, Lord Charles Gaunt, cast a shadow over her carefree days of idleness and enchanting evenings of dazzling balls and delicious flirtations. Lord Charles demanded she act the part of a proper and perfectly boring young miss. Even worse, he insisted she devote her waking hours to cultivating her mind rather than captivating her swarm of admirers. Thus, the battle was joined - between the handsome, arrogant aristocrat who had Patricia in his lawful power, and Patricia, who vowed to turn this hateful tyrant into her lovelorn slave.

beautiful Cinderella story

A beautiful love story about two sisters who grow up very mistreated. Due to their parents illness, they are invited to stay with a warm and loving friend where they enjoy their first Christmas and fall in love.

Great fun! Highly enjoyable.

Any additional comments?

I have listened to many audiobooks. M.C. Beaton's are fun, humorous and wonderful escape from the sometimes weariness of our daily lives. This is one of my favorites. The characterization stands out with the very engaging Patricia and Lord Charles. The excellent story keeps moving and is a bit different from many of the author's other titles. I also really appreciated the narration. Alison Larkin performed the book to perfection. She captured Patricia beautifully. I liked her pace, energy, charm, and the quality of her voice. We all know how the book will end, with the lovers together at last, but it is the journey that keeps us listening! Bravo.

Typical Beaton

As others have said, the heroine is mostly unlikable. She somewhat redeems herself toward the end. Additionally, the hero is just as unlikable. There isn’t much about these two that makes a person interested in them. However, it’s M.C. Beaton, and she’s always good for a fun, fast Regency tale. SPOILER AND TRIGGER ALERT: Unfortunately, there’s a scene later in the book where the hero tries to force himself on the heroine out of anger and drunkenness, and of course, she starts to respond. Thankfully that ends before it goes anywhere, but it turned me off to the story and to both of them completely.
