Publisher's summary

Imperial law enforcer Amaranthe Lokdon is good at her job: She can deter thieves and pacify thugs, if not with a blade, then by toppling an eight-foot pile of coffee canisters onto their heads. But when ravaged bodies show up on the waterfront, an arson covers up human sacrifices, and a powerful business coalition plots to kill the emperor, she feels a tad overwhelmed.

Worse, Sicarius, the empire's most notorious assassin, is in town. He's tied in with the chaos somehow, but Amaranthe would be a fool to cross his path. Unfortunately, her superiors order her to hunt him down. Either they have an unprecedented belief in her skills...or someone wants her dead.

Love the book series, don't love the narrator

I love this book series. I've read them all. This is the first book I've listened to and I'm not in love with the narration. It's a good story, so give it a try :)

Hooked With Just One Book!

This book had everything I'm looking for: Strong characters, humor, action, and fantastic world building. I will definitely be buying the series.

Starla Huchton brought the characters and world to life! Excellent performance!

Bad narration. Bad Editing.

Three hours in and I had to stop listening because the narration and editing was terrible. The story is interesting enough that I might pick it up on kindle though.

Starts Slow but gets better

Would you try another book from Lindsay Buroker and/or Starla Huchton?

I only give this 3 stars for 3 reasons.
1, The book started (first chapter +) quite slow but once it got going it was a compelling story.
2, Due to my being behind the wheel of my car much of the time, I listened to this book. The editing was atrocious. Many time there would be places where the first 3-5 words of a sentence would be repeated. There are also places in the audio that seems to skip or mumble words. This is the first time I purchased a Kindle version and then then the audio. I have usually purchased audio books from Audible.com or read books on my Kindle. Audible must have a higher standard for their versions than Kindle for the audio versions.
.

Would you listen to another book narrated by Starla Huchton?

3, There were I believe 5 instances where words seemed to have been mispronounced. I'm only guessing they were where half the word was on one page and the rest on the next page. I just felt it cut into the continuity of the story at those spots

Great narrator! Fun story

Very fun and imaginative story. Great narrator. I didn't think I liked books on audio until this one.

Trevethick story sadly needs a new narrator

The near reader detracted from the storyline I love this book and have read it multiple times and decided to purchase it in an audiobook you can't always tell when near reader is just a reading or trying to be one of the characters she also doesn't show the correct A motion that the after meant for the character to be showing I would not be sad if she chose to change narrators in the middle of this series I would definitely recommend the e-book to someone but I feel this version falls short of the magic the book possesses

Solid Storytelling, Quirky Characters, Engaging

I read this book as part of a "book-exchange" with a friend in attempts to get her to read something outside of the fantasy genre. Since this was the book she recommended to me and it was available in audio format, I figured I'd give it a shot.

Fortunately, this book wasn't boring. The plot progresses at an excellent pace so things never drag, and there are never any dull moments, between the harrowing escapes, banter between characters, and new mysteries that arise. Every character is unique and complements the others, every plot thread comes together at the end. It is really solid storytelling to the core. The only grip I could have is how Amaranthe manages to get out of some situations in such a, "Oh, how convenient that there was a secret door there!" sorta way, but it's far from game-breaking. I am a bit curious to continue the series, but we'll see.

Awesome story with fun characters

I am huge fan of Lindsey Buroker, and this is still my favorite series. The story moves along while still leaving time for character development and plenty of action. I really enjoy the characters, with all their quirks, and the way they grow together through the series. If you are looking for a well performed book with a heroine who is strong and smart, this is a great choice.

Another one but maybe not on audio

I like this but I suspect the reason I didn't like it more was I wasn't really crazy about the narrator because I read the one before this and liked it better. I'll read the next ones because I liked the characters a great deal. There were plot problems but I'm sure it will get better.

Great story, narrator not so much

Read this book a couple of years ago and really enjoyed it, so thought I'd try the audible experience of it. It was alright, but not nearly as good, since I had developed different voices for each of the main characters in my head, which this narrator unfortunately did not do. As a result, I had to pay closer attention to the story than usual to avoid getting lost, making the experience less enjoyable.
