About this listen

Malcolm Muggeridge contends that Christendom is quite different from Christianity. Christ said, "My kingdom is very much a part of this world, and thus subject to decay and eventual ruin." In this book, Muggeridge explores the prevailing downfall of Christendom. However, contrary to our natural impulse to mourn this, Muggeridge makes a cogent and convincing argument that now is a time to rejoice, "for it is precisely when every earthly hope has been explored and found wanting...that Christ's hand reaches out sure and firm."

If the past is a foreign country then it's good look for the wisest voices. Malcolm Muggeridge lived through so much of history and saw it first hand it's hard to believe he's left so much wisdom, humor and wit hidden and unknown to so many people. Some relevancy, some dated ideas (evolution was suspect to him) but always a pleasant companion.

Short and insightful.

Warnings about power and putting hope in any State are important reminders, especially since US Christians have in many instances assumed right wing politics and Christianity are almost the same thing. I found the narrator’s voice annoying at first. The accent sounded like a high school kid over-acting a British snob. I know it is just the way the person talks but it detracted from my ability to sense the true humility of Muggeridge’s voice.

There is a vast difference between Christianity and Christendom. Christendom as we know it today may be disappearing but the message and presence of Christ still prevails against all odds as exemplified by history over the last 2,000 years.

Prophetic on present day state of affairs!

Overall, Muggaridge makes his points clear and concise. It summizes years and books worth of theology and philosophy in three short chapters. In fact, it's so shrewdly put together I had to relisten to several key sentences multiple times just to soak in their meaning. He stated in the book that truth is on the top of a craggy mountain and it's climb to it a difficult one. Very well put. I can see why the late Ravi Zacharias spoke so foundly of him.

Shrewd & sweet, it's an absolute fantastic listen!

Muggeridge is so clear. I find his words insightful, specific, meaningful, hilarious, heavy, heartfelt and humble all at the same time. His clear presentation and defense of Christ and the gospel is inspiring and sobering. I would say his contemporary would be someone like Ravi Zacharias.

So good!

Mr Muggrige is superb in his though ,very insightful and sage. although some of his assumptions and presumptions are off the mark so far as theology goes ..one does not expect him to be as he is not a theologian. he is got a finger on the pulse of the demise of the culture...definitely a must read for any Christian trying to grasp the decaying of culture and mainstream christianity.

Very provoking indeed!!

This collection of two essays with a short introduction to Muggeridge might be the tonic needed to clear the mind of pointless drivel that passes for entertainment, amusement, scholarly research, and spiritual food.

While a tonic is temporary, Muggeridge shares musings of Pascal and Solzenitzyn, inspiring one to follow deeper into the same questions shared by all sojourners.

Yes, 1980 was a different time. These words are timeless.

Cleansing for the mind

The writing of Malcolm Muggeridge is a reminder to all of us, just how unaware and uneducated most of us really are. 😩

These are excellent. Malcolm Muggeridge is well worthy of study. The subject, Christianity, is delved into n a highly intellectual manner. Other persons of note are discussed. This is not a light reading, listening experience. It required my full attention. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
