About this listen

In Terms of Endearment, Larry McMurtry created some of his most memorable characters. He now reintroduces us to Aurora Greenway along with her family, friends and lovers, presenting a funny and bittersweet story about growing up and growing old.

Since her daughter Emma's death, Aurora has tried her best raising her three grandchildren -- but Tommy is in prison; Teddy has just been released from a mental hospital; and Melanie is pregnant and doesn't know who fathered her child. And through it all, Aurora's indomitable spirit and humor prevail.

A poignant and refreshing story of human resilience and the ties that bond family and friends, The Evening Star will take its place among Larry McMurtry's unforgettable classics, and is presented here in an unabridged reading to capture every word of this wonderful novel.

Terms of Endearment, after the movie

I truly liked this book. One person narrated the whole book, but had different voices for the characters. I loved the opening with the bickering between, Rose, the maid, and Aurora, the spunky 70(?) widowed woman. Aurora is lively and sassy, just as she was in the movie, Terms of Endearment. Many laughable moments and yet some sad ones as well. B+ rating all the way. Ending could have been a little smoother.

Weird story but I found myself caring about the characters

The narrator deserves an Emmy for her reading skills. Aurora's voice was the best.

As for the story, a tad too much sex for my tastes. I did come to adore Aurora and Rosy. I cared enough about the other characters that when they died I was almost sad.

Love and loss

The narration was very good, the best part of the listen. It seemed a little too long and repetitive at times. The characters were Interesting and quite eccentric.

NOT 'TERMS OF ENDEARMENT', BUT FUN

What made the experience of listening to The Evening Star the most enjoyable?

The wacky character of Aurora who will not disappoint.

Any additional comments?

If you enjoyed 'Terms of Endearment', you will delight hearing Aurora deal with her 3 grandchildren and they with her. The plot was weak, but the characters stole the show. The narrator was better than average.

Audio

The reading was distracting. almost cartoonish.
Accents used were inaccurately portrayed. Why is Aurora voice so wavering and quaking. Texas , Houston accent was so out upon.

Extremely Poor Listen

I cannot remember when I have last read(listened to) a worst book. It was a struggle for me to get through all three parts. The characters are not believable and the dialogue is dreadful.

Awful

I really wanted to love this book, after being a huge fan of the movies and adoring the character Aurora Greenway.I first started off not liking the narrators voice it was highly annoying and I found that her voice while being Aurora was not what I expected nor did is sound how Aurora in the films are portrayed. Now sticking with the story... I found very few similarities that go along with the film , other than that it in no way held any truth to what the movies are like. That fact also really annoyed me. Either I read a novel first or watch the movie I expect it to follow storylines almost to a tee I get things need to be changed for the sake of entertainment value when it comes to screenplays. But this story however was just utter crap.I couldn't stand Aurora, Mellie,Rosie and most of all The General. IT WAS JUST AWFUL. I kept hoping for it to get better but I couldn't even finish it I think I made it to chapter 7? I just gave up it was so terrible.
