About this listen

Kirkhaven Hall has been home to Isabella Rubén ever since she was sent into exile for treason.

It has always been a strange place; isolated, wrapped in dark clouds and ancient magics. No one really knows what’s hidden there, from eerie ghosts and warlocks to secrets House Rubén not only has kept from the rest of the world, but has itself forgotten. They thought those secrets would remain buried for eternity.

But now, as Isabella and her fiancé return from their holiday in Shallot, those secrets are starting to slip into the light. Strange lights have been seen on the mire, ghosts have been walking the halls, ancient artefacts have been discovered and the ground itself, tainted by dark magics, is threatening to give up its dead. As Isabella finds herself caught in an ever-growing nightmare, it becomes clear that the disaster is not limited to Kirkhaven…and the magic crisis has only just begun.

Isabella and Callum, a lot of mud, mire and rain

This is my second reading of The Family Secret, the first on Kindle. It works for me significantly better as an audio recording, in the excellent care of Saskia Maarleveld. It took me months to get through on Kindle, but it just breezed by on Audible. I was really looking forward to another book about Isabella and Callum, and it started well, with many solid scenes. I'm not especially interested in ghosts, mire, mud, a surfeit of evil magic and endless rain. That bogged me down (pun intended) on Kindle, as my bedtime reading. The overall series is awesome, and I know feel this is a significant episode, even if not my favorite by a long shot. I enjoy the slice of life scenes the best, as the world building is so strong. Overall series, highly recommended.

Another successful fantasy world

The story continues. The saga or magic is scientifically controlled. I love the fact that magic has rules, even though you have to have talent to use it.

4.2 stars

The story is very good but there are a few things that bother me. The largest is that the characters are whiny. If I have to hear "It's not fair!" one more time I may just scream. lol. But overall I did really enjoy it and am looking forward to the upcoming book 12.
