Publisher's summary

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • “Next to impossible to put down . . . exciting, mysterious, and totally satisfying.”—STEPHEN KING

From the author of The Passage comes a riveting standalone novel about a group of survivors on a hidden island utopia—where the truth isn't what it seems.

A POLYGON BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR

The islands of Prospera lie in a vast ocean, in splendid isolation from the rest of humanity—or whatever remains of it.

Citizens of the main island enjoy privileged lives. They are attended to by support staff who live on a cramped neighboring island, where whispers of revolt are brewing—but for the Prosperans, life is perfection. And when the end of life approaches, they’re sent to a mysterious third island, where their bodies are refreshed, their memories are wiped away, and they return to start life anew.

Proctor Bennett is a ferryman, whose job it is to enforce the retirement process when necessary. He never questions his work, until the day he receives a cryptic message:

“The world is not the world.”

These simple words unlock something he has secretly suspected. They seep into strange dreams of the stars and the sea. They give him the unshakable feeling that someone is trying to tell him something important.

Something no one could possibly imagine, something that could change the fate of humanity itself.

What did I just listen to?

I know I am in the minority with this review but I simply didn’t enjoy it.
Reading fiction, I try to invest in in the characters, get involved with them, their activities and actions, and absorbing the story as it unfolds.
With this book, I found myself wanting to try (and I really tried) to find something to grasp in any of the characters that made me care about them or what they were doing. I simply couldn’t do it. I found myself caring less as the book went on and just really hoped it would just end.
I always approach each new book by a previously read author with “new eyes and perspectives” but any hope of finding an “Amy”, “Wolgast”, “Peter” or even a “Zero” was dashed as the book dragged.
This one just didn’t do it for me.

Excellent story and characters you really care about

I read Justin Cronin’s other books and thought it could not get any better. It did! So many twists and turns. I will be reading it again. The narrators were very well cast, their voices drawing you into the story and the characters.

Sequel please!

Not expected, but fantastic

This isn’t the story I expected from the author of The Passage series. Quite a difference in feel and storytelling.
Creative world building, complete characters and multiple twists and turns. A complete drama, in the best sense of the word.

Excellent narrator.

not what I had hoped for

I really enjoyed The Passage, but enjoyed the next 2 books less and less. This book reminds me of that, starts well, leaves you disappointed. Same formula, even kinda kills off the people you enjoy right at the end. Not my favorite way to end a book, pointlessly killing the character that appeals to you the most, same as the Passage

Seemed a little long

I LOVE some of Cronin’s past work. The Passage is an all-time favorite. I just found this one hard to follow. It seemed to drag on but I didn’t feel like it was making much progress advancing the story for the amount of content that was there. Performance was really good. The guy sounds like Bryan Cranston.

Awful Hysterical Naration

The story was meh.
The narration was horrible!!!!!!
The narrators were in a constant state of hysterical overload and completely overacted everything and I mean everything!!!!!!!!Imagine 10 explanation points at the end of every sentence!!!!!!!!!
Annoying isn’t it????????
This style really detracts from what was an okay story.

Narration is William Shatner level

Will I remember this book? Probably not. It just kept going on and on. When you thought there was ending, there was another twist. But it wasn’t satisfying however the hardest part for me listening was the male narrator. The over emphasizing of words, dramatic pauses…I still don’t know why. And I feel like I’ve listened to the narrator before and not had that thought. The female narrator was good.

Cronin’s well crafted tale is derailed by inane storyline.

The faint patina of sci-fi tech cannot overcome the well worn trope of the plot’s core. Also, the protagonist is a bit of an ass and hard to root for.

Great Story

This is the first book I have listened to by Justin Cronin. It was a great book. I love the twist and turns. I will be reading more of his books. Well done.
