About this listen

The perfect husband. The perfect stepson. The perfect lie?

"Tremayne...does a terrific job of building suspense until events reach their climax in the midst of a violent storm." (Library Journal)

When Rachel marries dark, handsome David, everything seems to fall into place. Swept from single life in London to the beautiful Carnhallow House in Cornwall, she gains wealth, love, and an affectionate stepson, Jamie. But then Jamie's behavior changes, and Rachel's perfect life begins to unravel. He makes disturbing predictions, claiming to be haunted by the specter of his late mother - David's previous wife. Is this Jamie's way of punishing Rachel, or is he far more traumatized than she thought? As Rachel starts digging into the past, she begins to grow suspicious of her husband. Why is he so reluctant to discuss Jamie's outbursts? And what exactly happened to cause his ex-wife's untimely death, less than two years ago? As summer slips away and December looms, Rachel begins to fear there might be truth in Jamie's words: "You will be dead by Christmas".

I loved the book

I loved the book, it really did scare me. I was listening to the book alone in the house and it made me hear voices and imagine things.
One thing I didn't like was the other guy's performance, he gave me the idea that he was forced into this and he didn't want to read, but Imogen was amazing as always.

Love Stories Set in Old Creepy Houses.

This book was performed well and the characters were interesting. The authors personal history with the mines is the most intriguing part. The end kinda drags out, then finally comes around to the point of the mystery. Overall it was good.

Excellent Narration...somewhat good story

This book was a good read. Imogen Church is an excellent narrator. If it weren't for her this book would be boring. The story was OK but not great. It was still worth the read though.

Don't waste a credit - stupid story!

Is there anything you would change about this book?

Pretty much everything, I kept listening even though I wanted to give up SO many times! I was just hoping that somehow it would start to make sense. But alas, NO. So many things not answered, so many contradictions. The whole book might as well be the rantings of a madwoman.

What was most disappointing about S. K. Tremayne’s story?

the big "twist"... was just stupid, and not believable. I felt like a middle school kid wrote this.

Which character – as performed by Imogen Church and Peter Noble – was your favorite?

The narration was great! They did the best they could with this material.

Did The Fire Child inspire you to do anything?

Made me feel sorry for David, for men in general. Talk about ruining someone's life!

Any additional comments?

I can't believe I made it to the end, which was disappointing by the way.The whole story made me angry, left me asking tons of questions, and made no sense. It contradicted itself many times. The "big tragedy story" changed about 4 times, so who knows what actually happened. Jamie's statements/feelings changed every 5 minutes with no explanation, Rachel made the STUPIDEST decisions but then again, she's a whack job. She should not be allowed anywhere near children. Sorry I just didn't get this book.

My disappointment stalled my listening engine

I don't understand. I absolutely loved The Ice Twins. Loved it! I knew that SK Tremayne had another book out there and was totally excited when I saw it in Audible's 'Coming Soon' section. I marked my calendar. I preordered. I downloaded. I waited. Imogen Church spoke to me...and I was bored.
A little more time, I thought. Just need to focus. And I was still bored.
Description of the mines. History. A little creepy. Getting there...let's go pick up the kid at school. I'm bored.
Again, i don't get it.
Fire Child, I am not a quitter. I've snuggled you away for a rainy suspense thriller day, and I hope we can reacquaint later on more engaging terms.
I will be thrilled to update this review if something changes!
