About this listen

A tale of myth, mystery...and a past long forgotten....

Rinni and her brother have raised by their grandmother ever since the violent death of their parents at the hands of the Shadows, creatures who lurk beyond the walls and kill anyone who attempts to leave. But the biggest threat lies within their own village. Everyone and everything is dying, slowly and without hope of salvation. When a series of disturbing events leads her to question the intentions of their leaders, Rinni discovers just how far some will go to cover up the truth. The history of their beginnings is starting to unravel, the threads hopelessly bound up with the fate of those who left the village long ago. She discovers that her most vital beliefs are based on a deception that will rock the foundation of her entire people. To save them, she must learn to open her heart and sacrifice...everything.

Beautiful story with a surprising twist

The First is a beautiful story with a surprising little twist at the end. This is my third time reading the book and I have enjoyed it more and more with each reading.

If you like a whining female main character...

Then this book is for you! I didn’t have a problem with the plot in general though it turned a bit too religious for my taste at the end. A sort of what happens after the apocalypse story in which (spoiler alert) all people actually are angels just “born” in different places, some in heaven and some on earth.

The writing style however is a tad confusing although I am an avid reader. Perhaps it is better to read than listen. You only get the protagonists point of view and she is wholly focused on her own ramblings about her love interest and how the whole world is falling apart. There are no deeper descriptions of the environment or other characters which means that you are literary stuck in the protagonist head and lack of imagination.

The further I write about this book the more I realise that I didn’t like it at all, which almost never happens since I always try to find something to appreciate about the books I read. Okay, I will try to find something... I didn’t dislike the narrator. She did a pretty good job considering the content.

It's soooo bad.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

I will never read anything from this "author" ever, ever, ever again. That should help.

What was most disappointing about Lisa M. Green’s story?

It s so incredibly poorly written. It was so utterly, horrendous bad that I am speechless.

What three words best describe Elizabeth Siedt’s voice?

Pure. Expressive. Pleasant.

What character would you cut from The First?

I can't decide.

Any additional comments?

Just no.
