About this listen

A friendship is tested in this irresistible pause resister from New York Times best-selling author Elin Hilderbrand.

Nantucket writer Madeline King couldn't have picked a worse time to have writer's block. Her deadline is looming, her bills are piling up, and inspiration is in short supply. Madeline's best friend, Grace, is hard at work transforming her garden into the envy of the island with the help of a ruggedly handsome landscape architect. Before she realizes it, Grace is on the verge of a decision that will irrevocably change her life. Could Grace's crisis be Madeline's salvation?

As the gossip escalates and the summer's explosive events come to a head, Grace and Madeline try desperately to set the record straight - but the truth might be even worse than rumor has it.

good listen

Loved the book. The romance was so real, so well described it was palatable and you could feel it in your bones. I particularly liked the way the author described the food throughout the story. It wasn't cheesy. Nicely done.

Ending?

I loved the book but hated the ending. What happened to the characters? There was no closure…everything was left up in the air. Like the character, Madeline- she couldn’t close her stories either. Perhaps our author was channeling her. I was so disappointed. No more books about Nantucket for me for awhile.

Love the setting

Nice easy-going story. Kept my interest. I like the characters and their backgrounds, and intertwining of many different miniature stories. Best part was couldn't figure out how it was going to end until it did

Had me hooked

What did you love best about The Rumor?

The setting and characters were real -- real world happenings with families with teenagers, stay-at-home moms, working moms, people with little to do but chat away and maybe get creative and let their imaginations run wild

Who was your favorite character and why?

I liked Grace. She was authentic and didn't hold back.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes

Any additional comments?

Fun and loving

More scandalous than typical Hildebrand

Illicit trysts in the garden shed, prostitution, drugs...a bit less wholesome than the typical novel by this author. A little more plot and a little less character development (since there are so any characters). Very good none the less.

I loved the story but the ending was a little anticlimactic

I really did enjoy the book and am glad I listened to it. The narration was really good and the story line kept me interested but I would have like a more dramatic ending. I love Erin Hilderbrands books, and hearing of life on Nantucket and this book referenced a lot of the places I visited last year. Her books make me want to go back.

Slow to start but it gets better

This book had a really hard time catching my interest. I was about to give up but the second half really started to hook me in. Glad I finished it; overall a good listen.
