About this listen

On the anniversary of a teen’s disappearance, three friends face a deadly hometown reunion in this twisty suspense novel by a New York Times bestselling author.

On prom night, Caroline Winterfield walked away from the ruins of an abandoned mansion called Haven Cliff and into the woods…never to be seen again. Only her three best friends know what really happened. But a secret is a secret, and a promise is a promise—even when it shatters lifelong friendships.

On the twenty-fifth anniversary of that night, Midge, Kelly, and Talia reunite at Haven Cliff, now a gleaming architectural jewel. But they aren’t alone. Someone is watching. Someone who knows what really happened to Caroline—and to the man who now lies dead a stone’s throw from where she was last seen.

Police detective Midge knows she’s dealing with a murder the moment she sees the item clutched in his lifeless hand. Only three other people in the world would grasp its significance. That means Kelly and Talia are either involved or in danger, because Caroline is long gone…or is she?

“Staub…[doles] out key details with a steady hand before walloping readers with a surprise ending. It’s dark, satisfying fun.”Publishers Weekly

Loved this book! Always kept me guessing and I found myself excited for the next chance I could get to listen.

It kept me guessing

Great book but still so many things unanswered!!! Who was the father of Caroline and Mary Beth’s babies? What went on in their house growing up that made them that way? I need a prequel!!

There needs to be a prequel!

Too much back and forth in time. So predictable. I did not care for this book.

Slow read

If you're looking for a "complete" story with everything wrapped up in a nice little bow at the end, this isn't the book for you, YET! This is a great start to the series, I think some of the unanswered questions (and there are many, so fair warning) will be revealed in the next book or two, not sure how many books are anticipated. I liked the past and present storytelling from each woman's view. Hoping we don't have to wait too long to continue with Haven Cliff and its mysteries!

Enjoyed listening to the plots and turns of all the stories and couldn’t stop until the end!

I did enjoy the story and love murder mystery stories. this one felt like it had been told just slightly differently from the other ones I've read before. overall, I'd recommend this story as an easy story to track. I was just hoping for a story that would be less predictable for where it was going to land. I still had enough of a "who done it" possibility that I kept listening to find out who was actually behind the scenes. But it's good and enjoyable.

the predictable loom

Great story but I would like to have know who the baby’s father was!!! Who killed Caroline!!

Cliffhanger

Loved this book. The best I have listened to in a long time. Heart felt mystery.

Great read!!!

A very good development of character but the storyline is unresolved and weak with a lot of build up for a nothing burger. Very disappointed that I'll never get those hours back.

Anti climactic

Why was the new preacher mentioned if nothing came of it? Why was the father of Caroline’s baby never revealed? Why did it seem like MB hadn’t been the one to text them? What the hell ddi their parents do to them?
I feel like it had been a great engaging novel, and it ended horribly and sloppily. I feel angry and cheated.

So many unanswered questions it felt sloppy
