Publisher's summary

Book two in a new historical M/M series from award-winning author Isobel Starling.

Tuesday 28th, December 1897. Mr. Benedict Hannan, the owner of Hannan’s Auction House in Fitzrovia, London, receives an unexpected visitor at his Bloomsbury home. The man on his stoop sends Benedict’s heart into a flutter, and on inviting the mysterious stranger into his house, he is inviting mystery, adventure, and volcanic desire.

Sebastian Cavell, master thief, gives the impression he has sought out Benedict for the sake of business, but the kind of business Sebastian has in mind has nothing to do with making money! Cavell has been tasked with finding the whereabouts of a missing German aristocrat. With Benedict’s society connections, Sebastian gains access to his Gentleman’s Club and to men whose behavior is not so gentlemanly!

Benedict is pulled into the circle of a dangerous secret society, and he not only learns the truth about the mysterious Sebastian Cavell, but learns the truth about himself and all he truly desires.

FYI: This is historical gay romance and contains scenes of a graphic sexual nature.

Wonderful Addition

I love the way the author creates a detailed world with mystery and scandal. It’s a wonderful addition to the first and I’m excited for the next installment.

Benedict starts to trust Sebastian and even tries to help him with solving his cases. I love how the two interact together.

I do have some unanswered questions, but the stories not over…

Gary Furlong did an exceptional job. I love the way he expresses emotion and the voices he uses for the characters. I was easily pulled into the story.

Fantastic historical M/M mystery

I LOVE M/M romances that have a historical backdrop, setting personal desires against the way the church and society say men should behave, and watching men come to accept themselves and embrace each other and sexual freedom. The author writes entertaining, authentic characters, and the story drew me in and kept me on pins and needles. Many times, I felt some suspicions regarding Sebastian's behavior and intentions toward Benedict. He seemed to leave him hanging sometimes, and appeared to be using him and his connections. Both men have to learn to trust each other if their connection is to thrive. Along with this personal drama, there are adventures, danger, suspense. a mysterious secret society, sexual deviance, and occultism. It was an intriguing, sometimes humorous, hold-you-breath, on the edge of your seat story, and I can't wait to see what happens next.

The narration by Gary Furlong is great, and he really capture the characters' emotions, as well as various accents and vocal inflections.

I received a complimentary copy of this audiobook and am voluntarily leaving this honest review.

Masterfully narrated and thrilling mystery

Really liked this audiobook! Gary Furlong did an amazing job, as he always does, with the accents and emotional impact in every word. The performance was spectacular, masterful, Thrilling. Fell in love with the story so much because of how it was narrated.

This book is so well written, the research behind it is extensive, the language rich and the plot twisting and mysterious.
Benedict is pulled into the erotic cult of Brothers of the Seed, following the evens of the first book, he meets with Sebastian again and they embark in a dangerous tale of secrecy, desire and deception.
I love Sebastian's character, he is so interesting, accomplished and passionate. Benedict is the poor man that got sucked into this and has to fight his way out.
If you love Historical Romance, mystery and at-the-edge-of-your-seat suspense this is definitely the book for you.

I loved this and I'm ready for more.

OMG – the voices that Gary Furlong does in this book! I adore his French accent and the others are pretty good, too. 😊

The Gentleman's Thief is told in first person by Benedict Hannan. It picks up where The Shooting Season left off but you don't need to have read it to understand and enjoy this one. The author recaps all of the necessary details from that story so you won't be lost at all.

The main characters have a bit of an opposites attract relationship. Benedict is ashamed of his desire to be with men. He is an upstanding businessman and has remained celibate for many years. Sebastian Cavell is a man of many faces and is sort of a Robin Hood; he is not ashamed of who he is or of desiring men. The two make a connection and things really start to sizzle by chapter six.

There is a lot of intrigue and mystery, as well as danger, in this captivating story. It does end on a bit of a cliffhanger but as much as I want to listen to the next book once it's released, I wasn't left with the overwhelming feeling that I was at the end of book one. This absolutely doesn't mean that I didn't love this story because I did; I think it was actually great writing on the author's part. She left me wanting more but not wanting to strangle her. LOL

A complimentary copy of this audiobook was provided to me but my review was voluntary and not influenced by the author and/or narrator.

I found freedom to be my true self. - Benedict

Would I listen to it again: yes
Did the story keep me engaged: yes
Was I invested in the characters: yes

Story comment: Good pace, likeable characters, and an entertaining story. There is a lot going on in this story (drama, adventure, intrigue, and a secret society). The detail and dialog worked to create a vividly colourful journey as mature aged, stoic Benjamin lets go of the the man society thinks he should be to become the man he deserves to be.

At times Benedict's character makes my heart hurt for what he is going through, but the banter and free-spirited Sebastian is there to save the day. :)

Narrator comment: Gary Furlong is a perfect choice for proper English gentleman - both reputable and scoundrel. I had no problem distinguishing characters and the rhythm, inflections and intonations all worked to make the book come alive.

Awesome story

This book really was a hidden gem. Thought I’d give it a chance since Gary Furlong was the narrator. I’m so happy I did. It’s definitely as n adult erotica type book but wow the story line is great. I can’t wait for book 3 to come out. Gary Furlong was awesome as always. He did so many dialects it was so easy to follow what characters were talking. I can’t say enough about this book. This author is new to me but I believe she will be a automatic download for me. Definitely worth the credit. Now hurry book 3!!!!!!!!

The Gentleman’s Thief took me away

I just loved it. I felt as though I was taken back to a different place and time. The plot was sooooooo good, with a couple of twist. I can’t wait until the next book in the series comes out.
Gary Furlong is the narrator. I’ll be picking up more of his work.

Excellent sequel with more to come

Isobel Starling writes incredibly imaginitive stories with wonderfully rich characters that compel the reader/listener to keep going and then want more.

In The Gentlemen's Thief, Gary Furlong has once again done an amazing job with the story and the characters. Gary has become one of my favorite narrators and when I see a title with his name on it, it goes in my TBL right away, as does Ms. Starling's titles.

This book gave a very rich and textured story to Benedict and Sebastian's relationship as well as the story they get involved in where Benedict is asked to find a missing German aristocrat. They make their way to a Gentlemen's Club that may hold the answer to his whereabouts, but they find more than they bargained for when the head of the club takes an interest in Benedict.

The story also takes a twist that brings Benedict into contact with an old friend he had never expected to see again.

Buy this one and listen. You will assuredly enjoy it.

Great listen

Compared to book one of this series, The Gentleman’s Thief is a lengthier read. I was so glad that the author continued the story of the thief Sebastian Cavell and the slightly older gentleman Benedict Hannan. In this book we know who the characters are and we know a bit about Sebastian’s life of many disguises. It is still interesting to see him take on other personas, but it is nice knowing that there is one person who knows the truth about who he is and will keep his confidence. Since the story is told from Benedict’s point of view, I don’t feel like we truly know Sebastian as well as I’d personally like to, but what I do know has made him a character I love to see in action. I do believe he has a good heart and his work is intended to be righting past wrongs.

Benedict is still a bit prudish, and I don’t mean that in a negative way in regards to him. His religion and his one past relationship with a man have made him believe his desires are truly wrong. Still the heaven he feels in Sebastian’s arms makes Benedict feel like what they share can’t be wrong. I feel for Benedict and I hope that the more time he spends in his relationship will help him eradicate those feelings of guilt once and for all.

In this book, we get to see Benedict help Sebastian in one of his escapades. Instead of stealing a precious artifact or artwork from someone who gained it through dishonest means, he must retrieve a person who was lured away by a cult of men who enjoy homosexual acts and believe that they can achieve immortality through the consumption of certain bodily fluids. The leader of the cult is quite the schemer and I am unsure of his end game. Benedict’s boyhood lover Euan, who tried to trick Benedict in the first book also makes an appearance in this book and is the subject of the somewhat cliffhanger ending that happens in this book. I am feeling fairly confident in the romance that is taking place between Benedict and Sebastian but I have a feeling that the ex lover might try to throw some wrenches in the pending HEA. There are several questions that I hope will be answered in the next book and I will be sure to pick it up when it comes out.

Gary Furlong is an amazing narrator, I can't recommend him enough.
