About this listen

Sandman Slim must save himself - and the entire world - from the wrath of some enraged and vengeful ancient gods in this sixth high-octane adventure in the New York Times best-selling series.

Being a half-human, half-angel nephilim with a bad rep and a worse attitude - not to mention temporarily playing Lucifer - James Stark, aka Sandman Slim, has made a few enemies. None, though, are as fearsome as the vindictive Angra Om Ya - the old gods. But their imminent invasion is only one of Stark’s problems right now. LA is descending into chaos, and a new evil - the Wildfire Ripper - is stalking the city.

No ordinary killer, The Ripper takes Stark deep into a conspiracy that stretches from Earth to Heaven and Hell. He’s also the only person alive who may know how to keep the world from going extinct. The trouble is, he's also Stark's worst enemy - the only man in existence Stark would enjoy killing twice.

Kadry Rules

Fantastic resolution to story arcs started many books ago. Macleod Andrews remains the perfect voice for Stark and Richard Kadry retains his Favorites Shelf position in my library.

I like this series a lot. Plot holes are frequent.

This is a great series. Dark humor, cool action, neat fantasy/magic elements. I do feel like there are a lot of plot holes throughout. Inconsistencies exist here and there that are noticeable, but don't really affect much about the story or decrease the entertainment value. You'll just find yourself saying, "Hmmm, this doesn't make sense with something they said earlier in the book... or with a previous book."

I would certainly recommend the series.

Brilliant, As Kadrey always is

Let's put it this way: I will buy every single Sandman Slim novel in audio AND kindle that Richard Kadrey writes. Writing is excellent, the stories wonderfully imaginative, and lines so funny and/or thought provoking you actually have to stop and re-listen and ponder. Well edited and I have fallen in love with the Extremely Talented Mr. Andrews, as narrator.

Note to Mr. Kadrey - please, NEVER use a different narrator as MacLeod Andrews is perfect. Can't say perfect about too many things in this life.

A good story.. but lacks focus

First, let me say I love this series. I really appreciate the way Richard Cadrey can crete such a creepy atmosphere in his stories. He is probably one of only two authors (the other being Harry Connoly) who can truly capture the horror and madness of cthulu/outside monsters. Using the mythos has become trope and sanitized down from sanity shattering terror to mildly scary but beatable.

This book is fairly light on action. That is ok by me as the real weak point in the character is not in battle but dealing with his personal life. This book moves the meta-plot to a satisfying conclusion. He ties up most loose ends and leaves room to continue the series.

The problem, as said in the title, is the book almost completely lacks focus. It just kind of rambles along with very little direction. The series has suffered from lack of a tangible strong villian since he offed his Mason Faim. The author had a great opportunity to have a great villian in this novel but pretty much wasted it on a Hannibal Lector knock-off. I'm not saying the character use wasn't clever, but so much more could have been done.

This novel is your typical transition book. Transition books follow the pattern of wandering around aimlessly then hitting you with a bunch of changes and a big bang at the end. This is exactly what happens here. The last 2 chapters of this story basically set the series up for a complete reboot. I am worried that the series has lost its punk edge which made it cool and may be going to a more traditional Dresden-esque template.

That being said Kadrey is a great author and hopefully will surprise us all in new and inventive ways in the next book. The bottom line is if you like the series you will like this book, but probably not as much as the previous ones.

Review for Audio Books 1 - 6

Any additional comments?

This series is incredibly frustrating, entertaining, exciting, fun, brutal, and addictive!

In some ways I hate Sandman Slim but in other ways I love him. I love that he is pure evil but only to those bad guys who deserve to have their heads ripped off.lol

I absolutely hated every female in his life except for Alice. For some reason, seeing parts of his relationship with Alice that wasn't based on sex seemed more authentic.

Elegra (black chic) was always pissed at him and ridiculously judgmental about every thing he did unless he could do something evil to help her out of a bad situation.

Candy (Jade chic), I just never warmed up to her. Then she made some stupid comment about not waiting for him if he didn't return again. I'm thinking, "B*****...you didn't wait for him last time!" -roll my eyes-

Bridgette (Czech chic) was just ewe and completely pointless in every book. Although I would have enjoyed to see more of a development between the Priest and her. Ha! A Priest and a porn star.

The only friends of Slim I liked was a Vdoc and Carlos! They were the only ones who truly seemed to except Slim for the good and the bad. Well, except for Vdoc betraying him in book one. That was messed up especially after the betrayal that sent him to hell. But Vdoc and Carlos' laid back personalities and their non judgmental attitude's towards Slim made me like them even more.

I honestly wish the words monster, abomination, and Fairy would completely disappear from the next book. I swear every time someone called poor Slim that I kept thinking, " Well, if it isn't the pot calling the kettle black." Lol

Poor Slim has saved the world over and over again and every time all he gets in return is assassins trying to kill him, friends judging him, and don't even get me started on God, the Devil, and Angels. Oy Vey!!!

Anyway, the best part of this series is the 😍 narrator 😍. -gushing sigh- I've fallen in love with Mr. Andrews voice. He is so versatile with his voices. And with how beautiful he is I'm surprised he not on a TV series or in movies. He honestly brings this series to life!

Looking forward to Book 7, it's time to meet Death.

stark is defiantly a favorite character in many ways. out is an enjoyable story but this book seemed to lack a bit of the depth the others had thus far. a bit of a disappointing fight with the old God's and a bit unclamatic. still outs sandman slim
