About this listen

You've just laid down for the night when suddenly doors slam and the curtains shift. The lights begin to flicker and a white mist forms in front of you. You shut your eyes and keep muttering, "ghosts aren't real." But then you open your eyes and realize that "harmless" mist has shifted into the form of a man, staring intensely at you, as he floats above your bed.

What causes ghostly experiences?

Are ghosts real?

Why do certain people report numerous ghostly encounters and others none?

For centuries these questions have intrigued, puzzled, and bedeviled science, skeptics, and even believers. Based on cutting-edge research and new theories, The Ghost Studies provides insight into some of life's greatest mysteries.

This fascinating book is far more than a compilation of ghost stories. The Ghost Studies provides scientific explanations for paranormal occurrences, including:

  • New and exciting scientific theories that explain apparitions, hauntings, and communications from the dead.
  • The latest research on the role of energy and electricity in hauntings.
  • The role that emotions, bioenergetics, and the environment play in supernatural phenomena.
  • New research into why some individuals are more prone to ghostly encounters.

A good book covering an interesting topic

This was one of the most intelligent and unbiased books concerning the paranormal that I have ever had pleasure of reading/listening to. It doesn't trail off into the woo and claim that everything is mystical nor does it claim that everything can be explained with science. Instead it was refreshingly logical and balanced.

Latest Paranormal theories and sceintific research

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I have a long time interest in the paranormal after experiencing events that I cannot explain and having worked for years in the mental health profession with various kinds of psychotic people. In truth, I still take a "I can't prove it, can't disapprove it" sort of approach to the subject. Thankfully, Brandon Massullo uses the latest in scientific based theory to explore various ideas on not only whether or not the paranormal actually exists, but what might be people experiencing if not the paranormal.

What did you like best about this story?

I am totally interested in the idea of how electromagnetic fields impact people, and how there seems to be a collective memory or a "collective unconscious" in the environment of known locations that are haunted. Massullo presents all this in a way that is not too boringly technical, yet still gives enough information to expand one's own knowledge on the subject.

What does Jeff Cummings bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Cummings gives a sold performance as the narrator. He does not get in the way of the story, and his voice is reasonably pleasing. There is an energy to his presentation that prompts one to keep exploring the text.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

"Go to where the scientific method breaks down and is way over it's head." Massullo is not Rupert Sheldrake when it comes to exploring that which can't be explained by science. Still, he is a working class version that gives the everyday guy like myself a glimpse into the latest theories of the paranormal without making them too technical or boring.

Any additional comments?

This is a good find! Thanks, Audible.

Best ghost explanations so far

I have been looking for a book like this for a long time. He presents very good explanations for why people would experience paranormal phenomenona. And he does so without denying the reality of the paranormal or ghosts. The reading was very good.

Interesting theories based on unproven science.

"Spoilers ahead"

Some of the ideas in this book sound interesting but there is no proof that these events really happened or that they even could happen. The main idea to this book is that ghosts and hauntings might be emotional trauma imprinted on an area and not an actual spirit. My biggest problem with this is there is no proof that emotions can be recorded and then attached to an area. What is the emotion attached to, subspace or some physic alternate reality? The idea's fall apart the moment logic is introduced to the subject. Unless I slept through part of the book that explains this, there's just no way to take these theories seriously.

Not what I expected

This book could not hold my attention. Not at all what I expected from a paranormal book

Zzzz

Any interesting theories the author had are lost in endless sentences that go nowhere. I don't know how you make something as cool as ghosts boring but this book manages to do so.
