About this listen

An old man's hazy memory and a Polaroid snapshot are all Chee has to go on, but they are enough to send him deep into an underworld of murder and revenge when a shootout erupts between two strangers at the Shiprock Wash-O-Mat. One man dies, and the other drives off but not before showing old Joseph Joe a photograph of the man he is looking for. It's not much of a lead for Sergeant Chee, but it's enough to put him on the killer's trail.

Good Listen

I enjoy all of the Jim Chee and Joe Leaphorn books on tape. I listen to them again and again.

Always a pleasure

Always love the scenic descriptions embedded in Hillerman's well-plotted stories. Most of all I enjoy the warmth of his main characters. The stories are always a pleasure.

The Ghostwsy

I have nothing but good to say about the story and narrator, George Guidall. Tony Hillerman was a master storyteller.

Totally Absorbing

I came to Hillerman, Leaphorn and Ghee late in my reading “career” and I cannot put the books down. This twisty, exciting story has been my favorite. Can’t wait for the next!

Another good one

Little different in that Leaphorn wasn't mentioned. Also the L.A. characters with the bombing thing, I am not sure how that played out. I was a little confused. Still a good read.

Excellent

Vintage Hillerman. Great reader. Can't stop once you start. Prepare for not doing much else.

Traveling without leaving home

Hillerman and Guidall take you away from the routines of everyday life. His descriptions spoken by Guidall make you almost feel as if you can see the spacious country that surrounds Chee. Two incredibly gifted people I feel sad leaving at the end of each story.

One of the darkest

I've struggled with this one of Hillerman's great Chee/Leaphorn novels for years. It's literally off the rez. Which I'm always uneasy about.
That said, it's still a critical piece in the development of Jim Chee. And George Guidall always sounds like the voice of these early stories.
