About this listen

An old man's hazy memory and a Polaroid snapshot are all Chee has to go on, but they are enough to send him deep into an underworld of murder and revenge when a shootout erupts between two strangers at the Shiprock Wash-O-Mat. One man dies, and the other drives off but not before showing old Joseph Joe a photograph of the man he is looking for. It's not much of a lead for Sergeant Chee, but it's enough to put him on the killer's trail.

Another good one

Little different in that Leaphorn wasn't mentioned. Also the L.A. characters with the bombing thing, I am not sure how that played out. I was a little confused. Still a good read.

Vintage Hillerman. Great reader. Can't stop once you start. Prepare for not doing much else.

Traveling without leaving home

Hillerman and Guidall take you away from the routines of everyday life. His descriptions spoken by Guidall make you almost feel as if you can see the spacious country that surrounds Chee. Two incredibly gifted people I feel sad leaving at the end of each story.

One of the darkest

I've struggled with this one of Hillerman's great Chee/Leaphorn novels for years. It's literally off the rez. Which I'm always uneasy about.
That said, it's still a critical piece in the development of Jim Chee. And George Guidall always sounds like the voice of these early stories.

Hillerman never disappoints!

These books have been part of life library for many years. Like old friends, I am enjoying them again on Audible. listening to them makes them just as fresh as the first time I experienced them. No matter your prior experience I highly recommend you listen to them again!

Solid and original

Good old Tony holler man. I’ve read plenty of his books, just recently shifted to audio versions. This title escaped me all those years ago. Glad I finally discovered it. Pure excellence.

Wow - just wow!

I am listening to the series slowly and savoring them. This was a great book where Jim saves the life of a young woman in peril twisted into the deadly threads of this thriller. Surprised until the very last. Another great read - narration was excellent.

Ghost is seemingly one way.

I seem drawn in by the Navajo settings and curious also about their native tong. Maybe it is why Hillerman's writings intrigue and hold my interest. It makes me want more.
