About this listen

A dazzling blend of alternative history and detective noir, with just a dash of fairy tale.

A missing child in a small Transylvanian town could spell trouble for Hungary’s new revolutionary government. Another case for Ferenc Marlowe, pioneer private detective. Soon Marlowe is on an undercover mission to the Carpathian Mountains, where he must contend with the local nobility, Jesuit intrigue, and woods that are full of wolves...or something worse.

Jeremy Green does a great job of creating an alternative rendition of Little Red Riding Hood. He had incorporated religion and an altered history in Transylvania. In lieu of vampires there are werewolves.

The narrator sounded bored.

This is a decent story, but it really would be beater to read the first book in this series before jumping into this one. I did not. Still, after the first half hour or so of listening to this audiobook, the background became unnecessary to understand the tale unfolding. It’s not a story I’d been familiar with before beginning this audiobook.

Ferenc Marlowe is a private investigator in 17th century Eastern Europe. He’s gone undercover as a Chasidic Jew to join a contingent of clerics from various religions trying to solve the disappearance of a missing girl. In doing so, they hope to avoid an armed confrontation. Ferenc is woefully unprepared for the position he’s in, amid anti-Semites. The Jew haters want to blame the girl’s disappearance, and likely death on Ferenc. He, with the help of another in the group do their best to figure out what happened to her while remaining alive themselves.

The book was interesting. My biggest complaint about it was the narration. Many of the voices sounded the same, and so many words were mispronounced. Really, the narrator put little work into preparing his performance of this book. These short comings drew me out of the book and made me delay listening to it. It’s unfortunate.

I received a free code for a copy of this book from the author. I thank him for his generosity, but it had no effect on this review. All opinions in this review reflect my true and honest reaction to reading this book.

This was a odd but funny sort of mystery story. The MC under the disguise of a Hositic Jewish Rabbi (this character in book was actually a Jewish man, but in no way religious). Goes with a delegation of Religious Personage to examine the missing girl and determine what happened to her. One of this religious group is using the rumors to try to start a religious war. Narrator does a good job with the characters and Storyline

This book was truly hard for me to finish, especially with the storyline and narration. The story puts me in the mind of Little Red Riding Hood vs. Religion. A detective is sent to go undercover to find out what happened to a missing young girl but everything seems to be about starting a religious war instead of actually finding the missing girl plus what actually happened to her. The narrator mispronounced words and just did not have the vocals for this particular type of story. I received this book for free upon my request, and I regret it. This is my honest opinion this book was truly not for me because it bored me to tears.
