About this listen

The first novel in Lawrence Watt-Evans' Obsidian Chronicles: Dragon Weather.

Arlian had lived his entire life on the Smoking Mountain - the stony ground, jagged peaks, and black glass were all he had ever known.

But then came dragon weather: Oppressive heat, dark and angry clouds...weather that lured the dragons from their caverns deep beneath the earth.

And the dragons came - monsters with no sympathy for humans; dragons who destroyed his entire village and everyone in it. Everyone, that is, except Arlian.

Orphaned and alone, Arlian is taken by looters and sold into slavery, sent to labor in the mines for the rest of his life - until a freak accident and an act of mercy sets him free.

Free to seek revenge on the looters, the slavers - and the dragons.

But in all of history, no one has ever slain a dragon. Can one obsessed young man change the world and do what no one has ever done before?

Not disappointed!

This has been a book dear to my heart for the last 18 years. It spurred my love of writing and reading and has been one of my favorite books for all of my adult life. LWE has been one of my favorite authors for just as long and he never disappoints! I was ecstatic to hear that this book was finally in audio format, although I was cautious because I'm quite picky about what kind of voice I can listen to for hours on end, but I was pleasantly surprised by Shawn's performance! There were a few voices that took me by surprise, as they were nothing like what I had imagined, but the rest was pretty spot on and I look forward to not only the rest of the Obsidian Chronicles but also to exploring more books narrated by Shawn Saavedra!

narration was very well done. 4.95 stars
story was quite satisfying. 4.97

I give it four stars overall for nothing is perfect.
Yet, I recommend it; though my voice means very little.

This book was amazing can't wait for the next

Over all the narrator was great and the story was amazing but I feel like at the start of the story the over all story was kinda weak"just at first" . Basically just a few to meany coincidences at the start but over all if you're a fan of the heroes journey with some pretty good twists a and fun but not childish plot I'd recommend it. By the end I'll fell in love with the characters and the the book ended really strong.

Just Great

It's a great story. Loved the diversity of voices for the characters read by Shawn Saavedra.

My favorite book

This book is timeless to me and the audiobook is a great way to revisit it. I love this author. The combat sequences were so engaging in this book. The journey seemingly endless. The atmosphere is memorable.

Wonderful Story with Great Narration

What did you love best about Dragon Weather: Obsidian Chronicles?

The best part of DW was the narration. Shawn did a great job of giving every character life and personality.

What other book might you compare Dragon Weather: Obsidian Chronicles to and why?

honestly, Dragon Weather isn't much like any other books I've read. I mean, it has similar fantasy elements to LOTR or HP, but the storytelling is so much different.

Which character – as performed by Shawn Saavedra – was your favorite?

I was a big fan of his portrayal of Black. He gave Black a wonderful gritty edge that really translated the "rough and tumble" nature of the character.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I would have loved to have listened to this book in one sitting, but sadly, I don't have 20 straight hours to devote to a book! Just know that if I could, I would.

Any additional comments?

This book was fantastic. I read it in highschool and when I found out there was an audiobook, I was floored. Now we just need the other two books in the Obsidian Chronicles and I will be a happy camper!!

The Best

This is my favorite fantasy book out of them all. Had to listen to it after reading it long ago.

Fantastic trash

The writing is bland and leaves a lot to be desired. The main character does ridiculous things for nonsensical reasons and it just magically works out. It’s plot armor to the extreme. The main character suffers no setbacks, no breaks in his arc of revenge. Everything falls into place in such glaringly problematic ways.

It’s complete trash.
It’s exactly my kind of trash and I finished it in record time.

The Count of Monte Cristo, but with Dragons.

I absolutely adore this story. I first discovered this story when I was 12 years old and have read it annually nearly every year since, 15+ years later. Seeing as my original copy has gotten a bit worn thin, it's wonderful to have Dragon Weather on audiobook. I sincerely hope we get the subsequent novels, Dragon Venom & The Dragon Society in the near future.

I hate to say it though, I was not a fan of the quality of the reading. I felt his female voices were weak and almost always took me out of the story. That being said, he added new depths to Arlian which expanded my appreciation for the character. So I hope he returns for the next two books, just more care for women's voices would be appreciated.

odd voice acting choices

loved the book, so much so when I saw it was avalible on Audiobook I jumped at it. the narrator's overall performance is good but the odd choice of making the immortal Dragon hearts all talk like people from the old folks home who are winded and hard of hearing really takes away thier edge.
