About this listen

From Carrie Vaughn, author of the beloved Kitty Norville werewolf talk-show host series, comes the vampire origin story of Kitty's famed ally, Rick - and his sudden turn to darkness in the 17th century.

More than 500 years before his friendship with Kitty, noble Ricardo de Avila's life met a fate-changing twist, and his morally complex, blood-soaked existence as an immortal began.

Before being turned, Ricardo de Avila would have followed Coronado to the ends of the earth. Instead he found the end of his mortal life - and a new one, as a renegade vampire.

For over 500 years as an immortal, Ricardo has followed his own moral code, upsetting the established order in the demon world. He has protected his found family from marauding evil, joined up with a legendary gunslinger, tended bar, appointed himself the Master of Denver, and discovered a church buried under the Vatican.

The life of a vampire is frequently long, but for Rick, it is never easy.

love this series

this book was much shorter than expected, but still quite good. would have loved for it to have been a bit longer so it didn't almost feel like a waste of a credit

Ricardo de conquistador’s story, told to perfection!

The depth of the narrator’s voice is just lovely! His obvious comfort with Spanish accented English was also perfection!

I loved Rick’s story. It was so fitting, it filled out his history so very well. The surprise meeting at the crossroads was so very Rick.

I was prepared to request my library obtain this when Audible said not available & it wasn’t in Libby. It was a nice surprise to suddenly see it available! I listened for free, but will purchase so I can download & have with the rest of the collection. I very much appreciated Cormic’s story from his & Amelia’s perspective. This was just as enjoyable!

Good to return to the Kitty Norville universe!

So good, but the story was too short. I loved the back ground story on Rick, the master vamp of Denver. Hope there will be a sequel!

Thank you Carrie Vaughn

I don’t know how I missed reading this book. There were always so many questions about Rick in the Kitty Norvil series. This book takes us back to Rick’s beginnings as a vampire during the time of Coronado in Mexico. He reveals the secrets of his life. In doing so he finds a secret about himself that delights him. What an enjoyable story, I couldn’t put it down.

4 Ricardo backstories, darker than Kitty Norville

These four backstories for vampire Ricardo are darker and lack the snark of the Kitty Norville series.
They’re more soulful, exploring the nature of good, evil and religion to a man of god turned blood sucker.

1. Conquistador de la Noche - Ricardo’s origin story ⭐️⭐️
2. El Hidalgo de la Noche - new century, same vampire turf problems
3. Dead Men in Central City - Ricardo meets the legendary Doc Holiday⭐️
4. El Conquistador del Tiempo - ancient orders tracking ancient vampires, and Ricardo’s crossroads⭐️⭐️
