About this listen

#1 NATIONAL BESTSELLER • The thrilling first book in the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo series featuring Lisbeth Salander: “Combine the chilly Swedish backdrop and moody psychodrama of a Bergman movie with the grisly pyrotechnics of a serial-killer thriller, then add an angry punk heroine and a down-on-his-luck investigative journalist, and you have the ingredients of Stieg Larsson’s first novel” (The New York Times). • Also known as the Millennium series

Harriet Vanger, a scion of one of Sweden's wealthiest families disappeared over forty years ago. All these years later, her aged uncle continues to seek the truth. He hires Mikael Blomkvist, a crusading journalist recently trapped by a libel conviction, to investigate. He is aided by the pierced and tattooed punk prodigy Lisbeth Salander. Together they tap into a vein of unfathomable iniquity and astonishing corruption.

Good book.

A bit tough to follow in the beginning but well worth it to keep going.

Great Story

I'm usually not into the dark mysteries, but this was a great story. I didn't feel like the sexual scenes were overboard, because I thought the story was more focused on the murder mystery. I will say you need to be in the mood for something "darker" to enjoy this book.

Exciting and Thrilling

If you could sum up The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo in three words, what would they be?

Suspensful, shocking, and exciting.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo?

The building of the relationship between the two main characters.

What does Martin Wenner bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

He added another depth of emotion and excitement.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

It would have been nice, yes, but not possible due to personal schedule.

BUYER BEWARE - ABRIDGED VERSION

I'm pissed. They should really do a better job of showing users that this is the ABDRIGED version. Totally ruined my book club experience as I realized too late that there were only 6 chapters of this version... I chalked that up to being a brand new Audible user and not knowing how it works but I was SORELY mistaken. Now I am accidentally halfway through the book when I only want to be 150 pages in. Thanks a lot, Audible.

Dragged but have purchased the next in the series.

Before you start reading my re-buff (at the beginning) be it known that I just purchased the next book in the trilogy and it is unabridged.

I had heard that this book was hard to get into. Thus, I purchased the abridged version. Thank God that I did because the first half, even abridged, really dragged. Why this was a European blockbuster best-seller is beyond me. Along with the VERY slow start, the Swedish names because they unfamiliar were difficult to keep straight and remember. A good book, yes, but a blockbuster is a stretch.

Lisbeth Salander, a young computer hacker with an amazing photographic memory and anti-social tendencies who has a dragon tattoo did not have an important part in the book until the second half. Even then, she was not a focal character. Thus, I do not understand the name of the book. If you are trying to quit smoking or drink coffee, don’t read this book. These two items are more focal that Lisbeth.

Get past the first half and you'll meet some really interesting characters and get into a good complex mystery. The book takes many twists. That is why I have purchased the next in the series.

Martin Wenner is probably the worst narrator that I have heard. He doesn’t even attempt women’s voices. It is a straight read. He is NOT the reader of the next book that I have purchased.

ABRIDGED!!

Audible.com - You need to put "Abridged" in the title, not in small print on the very bottom of the book cover. I bought this without reading the comments. Yes, I should have known by the length, but there is no reason to not prominently mark this as an ABRIDGED version. Not going to lower the rating for Audible.com's mistake, though.

Slow start, worth the wait

This is a mystery about twisted human beings, whose secrets are uncovered and avenged by other twisted human beings. However, you would never guess it was a mystery about people judging by the first 100 or so pages. A large chunk of the beginning of the book has to do with a financial scandal. Get past that and you'll meet some really interesting characters. While the ending ties back to the financial scandal, it's not enough of a connection to justify so much time and detail up front.
