Publisher's summary
One of Author Anna Katharine Green's innovations was the idea of the “girl detective,” in the person of Violet Strange. Violet was a 17-year-old high-society debutante who led a double life as a sleuth, working for an unnamed detective agency to discreetly ferret out solutions to mysteries that could not be trusted to the police. The short stories in this collection give us a glimpse into New York society, filled with musicales and teas and ballgowns, but neither the tales nor Violet are light-hearted and fluffy. Happy endings aren’t guaranteed, and we’re often left with a sense of melancholy. Some of the stories are even a bit macabre. But over a century later, the well-plotted, legally-accurate yarns still satisfy one’s desire for solid resolutions to seemingly insoluble mysteries.

Story
Fyodor Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment is universally regarded as one of literature's finest achievements, as the great Russian novelist explores the inner workings of a troubled intellectual. Raskolnikov, a nihilistic young man in the midst of a spiritual crisis, makes the fateful decision to murder a cruel pawnbroker, justifying his actions by relying on science and reason, and creating his own morality system. Dehumanized yet sympathetic, exhausted yet hopeful, Raskolnikov represents the best and worst elements of modern intellectualism. The aftermath of his crime and Petrovich's murder investigation result in an utterly compelling, truly unforgettable cat-and-mouse game. This stunning dramatization of Dostoevsky's magnum opus brings the slums of St. Petersburg and the demons of Raskolnikov's tortured mind vividly to life.

First appearing in print in 1890, the character of Sherlock Holmes has now become synonymous worldwide with the concept of a super sleuth. His creator, Conan Doyle, imbued his detective hero with intellectual power, acute observational abilities, a penchant for deductive reasoning and a highly educated use of forensic skills. Indeed, Doyle created the first fictional private detective who used what we now recognize as modern scientific investigative techniques.

Story
Starring Orson Welles, Anges Moorehead, and Ray Collins, The Count of Monte Cristo is a tale of revenge and retribution. Edmond Dantès, a young, energetic sailor, is falsely accused of treason on his wedding day and incarcerated in the forbidding Château d'If. His escape and ultimate revenge on those who wronged him makes this one of the most thrilling stories in French literature, as compelling now as when it was first published in 1846.

The first Caroline Keen
Anna Catherine green takes you always on a trip through a Time Machine to the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century in upper class and upper middle class New York, where she paints an accurate, sometimes haunting, once in a while, amusing picture of a time gone by. this first Nancy drew character is filled with quirky, Victorian ideals, and rules to live by. If you enjoy time, travel, without Science Fiction, I recommend it.
