Publisher's summary

Find God's vision for your job.

Reclaim God's vision for your life.

Many Christians fall victim to one of two main problems when it comes to work: Either they are idle in their work, or they have made an idol of it. Both of these mind-sets are deadly misunderstandings of how God intends for us to think about our employment.

In The Gospel at Work, Sebastian Traeger and Greg Gilbert unpack the powerful ways in which the Gospel can transform how we do what we do, releasing us from the cultural pressures of both an all-consuming devotion and a punch-in, punch-out mentality - in order to find the freedom of a work ethic rooted in serving Christ.

You'll find answers to some of the tough questions that Christians in the workplace often ask: What factors should matter most in choosing a job? What Gospel principles should shape my thinking about how to treat my boss, my coworkers, and my employees? Is full-time Christian work more valuable than my job? Is it okay to be motivated by money? How do you prioritize - or balance - work, family, and church responsibilities?

Solidly grounded in the Gospel, The Gospel at Work confronts both our idleness at work and our idolatry of work with a challenge of its own - to remember that whom we work for is infinitely more important than what we do.

Transformative

I needed this book in my life. I’ve been struggling with feeling like my job was meaningless, outside of providing for my family. I drive a lift in a warehouse... not the most glamorous or respected job in our society. I’ve been a believer my whole life and feel called to the ministry. However, I’m 30 and married with three kids. Full time ministry hasn’t happened yet. I have been seeing this season of my life as a waste. Just a necessary evil while I wait to do something worth while. I was wrong. I’ve been wrong. God has me here, in this job, at this time, for HIS purposes. I feel that what I’ve really missed out on now, is the opportunity to love obediently for Him here, and see what He might have in store for me and those around me. So the next step for me is repentance. Repenting of my sin. Repenting for being idol in my work. Repenting for my lack of faith and testimony while I’m here. I am going to turn from that. I’m going to pursue what God has for me here, even if it isn’t my favorite type of work. Even if it isn’t what I’m most passionate about. I am passionate about God, and making disciples of Him. That is enough for me. I reflect on Jesus’ heart while He was here on earth. It was everything to Jesus just to be in the center of His Father’s will. It’s enough for me.
