About this listen

New York Times best-selling author Timothy Keller shows how God calls each of us to express meaning and purpose through our work and careers.

In a work world that is increasingly competitive and insecure, people often have nagging questions: Why am I doing this work? Why is it so hard? And is there anything I can do about it?

Tim Keller, pastor of New York's Redeemer Presbyterian Church and New York Times best-selling author of The Reason for God, has taught and counseled students, young professionals, and senior leaders on the subject of work and calling for more than 20 years. Now he puts his insights into a book for listeners everywhere, giving biblical perspectives on such pressing questions as:

  • What is the purpose of work?
  • How can I find meaning and serve customers in a cutthroat, bottom-line-oriented workplace?
  • How can I use my skills in a vocation that has meaning and purpose?
  • Can I stay true to my values and still advance in my field?
  • How do I make the difficult choices that must be made in the course of a successful career?

With deep insight and often surprising advice, Keller explains that biblical wisdom is immensely relevant to our questions about our work. In fact, the Christian view of work - that we work to serve others, not ourselves - can provide the foundation of a thriving professional and balanced personal life. Keller shows how excellence, integrity, discipline, creativity, and passion in the workplace can help others and even be considered acts of worship - not just of self-interest.

Packed w insights, great compilation & synthesis

Enjoyed this immensely! Tackles some misconceptions about a Biblical view of work. Keller and Alsdorf have expanded my thinking about 'work' and given a voice to ideas that are not addressed in our culture.

I like Amazon's whispersync because I retain more when I read and listen at the same time. The reader makes a big difference, and unfortunately this reader was not very good. His speech was halting and staccato, missing emphasis where it seemed appropriate. However, the reader was pleasant and not annoying (in some cases, it's better to avoid a reader).

Excellent!

I spent today listening to "Every Good Endeavor, Connecting Your Work to God’s Work" by Timothy Keller as audiobook. It is very good! It has given me perspective. It has corrected me, filled me up and given me much to consider. It has answered some of my pondering and has been very instructive. I have yearned for a thoughtful theological and philosophical discussion about current practical issues and this gave that to me. It has pulled me out of the trench and given me a broader overall view of that which I have been struggling with most. Discussion of God's design, purpose, society, theology and philosophy in plain language. Good stuff. I am grateful!

Fantastic Book

I enjoy Tim Keller's sermons on YouTube but hadn't read any of his books. I've been recently going through a career crisis and deciding where to go in my late 20's. A good friend and deacon of my church recommended this book.

He did a fantastic job putting many issues in a context that's easily digestible. The narrator did a great job as well. Although I would've personally enjoyed hearing Tim read it.

Thoughtful and accessible

This is a thoughtful and practical corrective to the false dichotomy of Christian faith and work. It would be great for an individual, but even better to process with others.

This book made me think very differently about my work in a great way!

The story of our lives determines how and why we do our work. The author really opened my eyes about the value of work and how big of a gift it is from God. There is so much good stuff in the book that I will have to listen to it a few more times.

This is one of those books to read once a year. So uplifting and grounding in a way few other authors can do. 5-stars!

Every graduate should read this book

Fantastic treatment of how doing your work is itself the calling God has brought you to.

Tim Keller offers great insight!

Would you listen to Every Good Endeavor again? Why?

I'll admit. I bought this book on my kindle a few months ago and just couldn't get into it. I've been devouring audio books at a much faster rate than actual books lately, so I figured I'd give this one a try. The narrator offers a great reading of Tim Keller's thoughts. The book is less of a "how to" book and more of a collection of insightful thoughts and recommendations. I would definitely recommend this book!

What was one of the most memorable moments of Every Good Endeavor?

There were too many to count. My plan is to review the book in a few weeks and pull out some of the quotes that really hit home.

Have you listened to any of Lloyd James’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have not listened to any others, but I was very impressed by the narrator.

Most Don't Realize.....

Most people do not realize that one's work is actually a gift from God, and that specifically a Christian shows where s/he is at on their spiritual path (for good or bad) by how seriously they take their jobs. The author, Tim Keller, makes the reader aware of the importance of demonstrating diligence and excellence in our occupations as a way to worship God. I couldn't put the book down! I loved this book, very motivational!
