About this listen

An inventive and fantastical reimagining of Anne of Green Gables—with magic and witches!—that explores found family, loss, and the power of a girl's imagination, from the acclaimed author of The Language of Ghosts and The School Between Winter and Fairyland. Perfect for listeners who loved The Girl Who Drank the Moon and Serafina and the Black Cloak.

"A magical, witchy, and thoroughly successful homage to a classic." —Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

Grace has never been good at anything except magic—not that anyone believes her.

While other children are adopted from the orphanage, nobody wants Grace. So she decides to make a home for herself by running away and offering herself as an apprentice to the witch in the nearby woods. After all, who better to teach Grace to use her magic? Surely the witch can’t be that bad.

But the witch is that bad—she steals souls for spells and gobbles up hearts. So Grace offers a deal: If she can learn all 100½ spells in the witch’s grimoire, the witch will make Grace her apprentice. But if Grace fails, the witch can take her magic. The witch agrees, and soon an unexpected bond develops between them.

But the spells are much harder than Grace expected, and when a monster from the witch’s past threatens the home Grace has built, she may have to sacrifice more than her magic to save it.

I thought this story was delightful. It was well written with great characters. I loved how she spoke about language and nature. It took me back to an earlier magical time when just exploring the wonders of the woods was a perfect day.

I read all of the Anne of Green Gables books when I was a kid. I thought the author nailed this magical reimagining of Anne Shirley. Enough similar plot points and characteristics to harken back to the original, but something completely its own as well. Very well done…I loved it! I was not familiar with this author before but loved this enough to look her up and see that she has many well-loved adult books as well. I queued one of those up for my next Audible listen!

Love YA books that are comfort reads, while also keeping you on the edge of your seat because you get so invested into the world of magic and fairies as they describe it. I will say the ending was a bit unexpected and I felt like a lot of details in the ending were pretty blurred for a standalone. I’m still curious about certain aspects that were resolved vaguely, although it still summed things up enough to receive 5 stars.

Best way to escape is a YA comfort read including magic and adventure.

Good story for middle school age-adult (me haha). I love the author so this was a great story. My only complaint is that the narrator kind of sounded like she had grapes in her mouth while reading. But I was still able to get through the whole thing!

Pretty good.

A fun story of a young witch finding her path. I loved the nods to Anne of Green Fables.
I’d love to get a story from Rum’s home and POV.

Whimsical and magical
