About this listen

Set against the backdrop of America's Great Depression and Dust Bowl, a family of farmers from Oklahoma head west in search of work, only to discover thousands like them are also on the move. Following a violent altercation with some locals, they head back on the road with their dream of a promised land in tatters. And life is set to get much worse for the Joads....

John Steinbeck's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel about economic migration and the endurance of the human spirit is dramatized by Donna Franceschild and directed by Kirsty Williams.

Excellent short synopsis, outstanding voice acting . I’ve been playing and singing The Ghost of Tom Joad, everything now in context

Would you try another book from John Steinbeck and/or the narrators?

I liked the dramatized version but would not read another book by John Steinbeck. It was really boring to read so that's why I got an audio book.

What could John Steinbeck have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

The topic just wasn't for me. The accents distracted from the story line, though they were realistic.

Which scene was your favorite?

The dancing scenes.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

Perhaps, just because it gives a good feel for the time. Probably not in theaters but at home.

Any additional comments?

The unfortunate thing about the dramatized version is that it cuts out a lot of the book but it makes it more enjoyable to have the drama.

Soap Opera

Nicely performed. Fairley and Sheehan did an amazing job, especially. Gut-wrenching emotion felt from both.

Abrupt ending, but well done! Beautifully sad.

I listened to East of Eden and wanted to hear another of Steinbeck's iconic novels. I chose the dramatization version because it was sometimes hard in the straight narrative to discern which character was speaking. This version was just as hard and I lost 70% of the descriptive content. So disappointed!

You miss too much with the dramatization!

You missed many important parts of the book. This was a great injustice! Best left undone than do it badly.

Incomplete

This was good and the dramatization was enjoyable BUT it is only 3 chapters...so certainly doesn't have any value.
