About this listen

'One of the greatest storytellers of our time' Delia Owens, author of Where the Crawdads Sing

In this unforgettable portrait of human frailty and resilience, Kristin Hannah reveals the indomitable character of the modern American pioneer and the spirit of a vanishing Alaska-a place of incomparable beauty and danger. The Great Alone is a daring, beautiful, stay-up-all-night story about love and loss, the fight for survival, and the wildness that lives in both man and nature.

‘A woman has to be tough as steel up here. You can’t count on anyone to save you and your children. You have to be willing to save yourselves’

Thirteen-year-old Leni is coming of age in a tumultuous time. Caught in the riptide of her parents’ passionate, stormy relationship, she dares to hope that Alaska will lead to a better future for her family, and a place to belong. Her mother, Cora, will do anything and go anywhere for the man she loves, even if it means following him into the unknown.

As Leni grows up in the shadow of her parents’ increasingly volatile marriage, she meets Matthew. And Matthew – thoughtful, kind, and brave – makes her believe in the possibility of a better life.

‘A masterclass’ - Karen Swan, author of The Stolen Hours

‘A rich, compelling novel of love, sacrifice and survival, as epic as the Alaskan landscape it so vividly describes’ - Kate Morton, author of Homecoming

Kristin Hannah's books are intense - to the point where sometimes I have to roll my eyes wondering if it can get any more extreme. But her storylines are brilliant and always find their way back gracefully to a redeeming end. The Great Alone is a great book for those that like long tales, the outdoors and plots with endless twists and turns. If you liked the Nightingale, read this book!!

Absolutely gripping and tense and beautiful. Sometimes a bit too much drama and the constant feeling of impending doom gets a bit much. However, I couldn’t stop myself from falling in love with the characters and the way it was narrated. And, of course, Alaska.

Phenomenal story, outstanding narration

When i started listening to this production of the great alone, i thought i was going to be disappointed, i was wrong. Such a beautiful story of survival, overcoming hardships, love in all its facets and domestic violence. I loved the backdrop of Alaska and learnt a lot about what it takes to live there. I will be processing this listen for weeks to come.

This is a book about family relationships and toxicity intertwined with love and the complications that cause broken lives.

It’s a book about self-sacrificing love and the power we have a people to achieve this, even in the face of great adversity.

It’s an ode to place and a people whose way of live differs so from modern culture and lifestyle, yet has its own beauty in hardship.

It’s was wonderful and heartbreaking and frightening and inspiring....

Very nice written novel. Readers could imagine the life and wild in Alaska and that because it was well described by the author. I think it is a little bit long and could be shorter.

Loved it. The nature of Alaska is described beautifully. The story is intriguing, even though at some point I already thought that there shouldn't be any more setbacks. Couldn't stop listening. I think the book describes so we'll how there are places you feel at home and that you will always miss if you can't be there.
