Publisher's summary

Budd Schulberg's celebrated novel of the prize ring has lost none of its power since its first publication almost fifty years ago. Crowded with unforgettable characters, it is a relentless expose of the fight racket. A modern Samson in the form of a simple Argentine peasant is ballyhooed by an unscrupulous fight promoter and his press agent and then betrayed and destroyed by connivers.

Mr. Schulberg creates a wonderfully authentic atmosphere for this book that many critics hailed as even better than What Makes Sammy Run?

Critic reviews

"The quintessential novel of boxing and corruption." (USA Today)
"The book will stand not only as the novel about boxing but also as a book that indirectly tells more about civilization than do most books about civilization itself." (Arthur Miller)
"Brilliant, witty, and amusing - the best book on fighting that I have read." (Gene Tunney)

A flawless and jaw-dropping tragedy.

This book left me speechless. The dialogue, prose, rich characterization and ultimate tragedy of this story is just second to none. Tragic beauty.

Wonderfully narrated

The narrator poured life into the characters. Thoroughly enjoyed it. I am surprised(and disappointed) that this book is still not rated.
While the book is in itself a classic piece of writing, the narrator made it atleast 10 times more enjoyable through versatility in which he gave voices to characters.

Damn what a tragedy

Great book. Starts slow, sometimes I was very bored and felt like a chore to listen to because of the amount of characters BUT about 1/3 of the way in it gets hard to put down. Spoiler :

The main character you think is going to have it all work out in the end realizes his dreams are fake and he’s lost everything. Tragic story about chasing a buck and passing up on the better things in life.
