About this listen

The Mercer house is the perfect place for Chef Lindsey's restaurant - or so Lindsey thinks. The house's horrific past would make anyone run, but Lindsey is not aware of the gruesome events that occurred there on Halloween many years ago.

Lindsey's dreams soon turn into nightmares as strange sounds are heard, cigar smoke makes her choke, and apparitions of a ghastly man and weeping woman appear, threatening her.

And when Halloween approaches, Lindsey knows she must fight for what is hers or lose the Mercer house, and her dreams, forever. Can Lindsey take back what is hers before she loses everything - even her life?

Really enjoyed this quick tale!

The Haunting of Mercer House: A Halloween Haunting by Carrie Bates has everything that I could want in a short story. The plot was well thought out and I didn't want the story to end. Truly, Ms. Bates could have made this a longer story, but it was a solid listen just as it was. I don't want to give away any of the story, but when Lindsey purchases Mercer House from the bank to turn into a restaurant, she has no idea what she's in for. She quickly learns about the houses history and some of the atrocities that happened in the past. A really enjoyable, quick listen!

Sean Duregger did a good job narrating this tale. He did a great job bringing the characters to life and it was really easy to get lost in the story. I'll definitely listen to more of his performances in the future. I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher for an honest review.

Revenge out of control

I love a good haunted house story and I have to say that Carrie Bates always offers me something interesting in her haunted homes. The backstory is always very tragic and makes you sympathetic to the plight of those caught within its walls. While the characters are good they are not totally fleshed out like I would like them to be, but that is of course just my preference. The description of the town both in the past and present is a little thin but adequate for the amount of time spent talking about it.

Mercer House is the perfect spot for Chef Lindsey to start her restaurant, or so she thinks. The house has a dark history that would cause anyone to take pause, if they knew about it. What happened on Halloween years ago has left a stain that may not go away. Lindsey's dream soon turns into a nightmare as strange things start to occur that not only affect her but her staff. And as Halloween approaches things only become worse and she must either fight or lose everything she has worked for.

This was entertaining and gave me a bit of a fright at the end, though I kind of saw it coming.

Story was lackluster.

I got a copy of this audio book on request, in exchange for an honest review. I found the story rather slow, not very unique or descriptive enough to captivate me, there wasn’t enough detail to paint a picture, it was quite dull. However it did have some redeeming qualities and scenes that made me grin, wince and chuckle, for how short this story is that was seldom. I learned this was the narrators first reading, at least to my knowledge. Whilst his voice for lindsey made me cringe a little being rather feminine force and a little to high pitched going harshly against the narrators normal speaking voice. I think all the other characters he portrayed had a nice tone and personality that drew me to the individual. His third person perspective voice, was also rather pleasant and easy to listen to. I think he was the most redeeming quality of this story if it wasn’t for his decent use of variable tones and inflections I would have easily gotten bored with this and would have been unable to finish listening to the tale, even though it is a rather short story. I commend the narrator this being his first reading, I am impressed and am sure he will get better the more stories he tells.

Haunted House

This short story is very much a typical haunted house tale. Several things kept it from being more than a 3 star listen for me.

First of all, it was told in a very matter of fact way and at no time did I really feel the tension or scariness that I would expect from a tale such as this. Also, I had to stretch my believability a little in that a huge house like Mercer House, built by a prominent man, is sold to an unsuspecting woman. Having lived in small towns, I found it hard to believe that nobody seems to know the horrific tale associated with this house. Even when the main character starts to see things and questions the locals, nobody really seems to know anything about what happened.

That being said, after the lackluster scares of the first part of the book, the ending definitely came out of nowhere and surprised me. But, it also felt a little rushed after the buildup.

The narrator, Sean Duregger, does a great job and added a lot to my enjoyment of the book. All in all, I would recommend this book for diehard haunted house fans who just want a quick read without a lot of scares or gore.

I was given the chance to listen to this book by the narrator/publisher/author and chose to review it.

A Haunting

This is not her best ghost story but still a short quick listen with good narration. Lindsey plans on changing the Mercer House into a restaurant. She finds out it is haunted by Don, Jane as well as George her father and Tom, a cop, helps her out. The scariest part was the epilogue. and is ok for a quick Halloween story as well as younger crowd. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review. Thank you

Incomplete story

I wish I could give this a better rating because the narrator did a great job. The story was so incomplete with holes that it just didn't work. The end had a twist that didn't fit. The story has a good premise but it did not have a follow through. I received this audio book at my request and I am voluntarily leaving my honest review.

Oh My Goodness - catch you at the end moment

Wow - this was wonderfully performed and the story's ending is not to be expected. Don't want to give it a way but truly a surprising ending.
