About this listen

The Hiding Place is terrific in every way.” (Lee Child)

From the acclaimed author of The Chalk Man comes an unputdownable psychological thriller about a man who returns home to settle old scores - and uncovers a secret darker than he could have imagined.

Joe never wanted to come back to Arnhill. After the way things ended with his old gang - the betrayal, the suicide - and what happened when his sister went missing, the last thing he wanted to do was return to his hometown. But Joe doesn’t have a choice, not after a chilling email surfaces in his inbox: I know what happened to your sister. It’s happening again....

Lying his way into a teaching job at his former high school is the easy part. Facing off with onetime friends who aren’t too happy to have him back in town - while avoiding the enemies he’s made in the years since - is tougher. But the hardest part of all will be returning to the abandoned mine where his life changed forever, and finally confronting the horrifying truth about Arnhill, his sister, and himself. Because for Joe, the worst moment of his life wasn’t the day his sister went missing. It was the day she came back.

Critic reviews

“Tudor maintains a tone of creeping dread throughout the book, of something lingering always in the background, coyly hiding its face while whispering promises of very bad things to come. In the last quarter, however, she goes for broke with outright horror, giving readers an effective jolt of adrenaline that will carry them all the way to the terrifying conclusion. Readers won’t know what hit them. Tudor came out swinging with The Chalk Man, but this one puts her firmly on the map. Not to be missed.” (Kirkus)

“Tudor has crafted another fantastic horror-tinged thriller (after The Chalk Man, 2018) in the vein of John Connolly and Brendan Duffy." (Booklist)

"Some writers have it, and some don't. CJ Tudor has it big time - The Hiding Place is terrific in every way." (Lee Child)

I loved the way Richard Armitage brought this book to life. Great book! Won't regret!

An excellent book. Some may feel it starts slowly, I do not. It lays a perfect groundwork for the rest of the story, which is a sucks-you-in page turner you'll not want to put down.

A definite thriller in the vein of Tana French & others I can't name (for reasons that'll become clear), grab you by the throat, drain you of contol/free will, & release you when it's good & ready.

An absolute must read!

Evocative of other authors. Must read!

Remember back in school when you would have to write an essay and use extremely long words and beat around the bush as much as possible before anything meaningful was conveyed just so you would make the word count? That explains this book plus the plot is pretty predictable. As for narration, to each his own but listing to this guy requires your FULL attention. No multitasking here.

WaaaAaaYYYyyyYyy too wordy

Richard Armitage is an amazing narrator. He narrates this book perfectly, and the characters are created in depth. He brings them to life very well, and the storyline is part horror, and part story of life in that area. It is really an excellent book!

This is a wildly implausible story transformed into a very good one owing partly to clever writing, but mostly to the superb performance of Richard Armitage. It's good enough to make me want to hear CJ Tudor's next novel, whatever it may turn out to be, as long as Richard Armitage performs it!

Horror with a touch of wisdom

With this, her second thriller, CJ Tudor continues a winning streak that began with “The Chalk Man.” If Michael Robotham wrote Stephen King’s Pet Sematary it might read something like “The Hiding Place.” When a disabled high school teacher (of a somewhat questionable character) digs into a terrible childhood incident he finds unexpected villains and possibly supernatural forces at work. Good read. Richard Armitage is a star among readers.

Tudor=King+Robotham
