Publisher's summary

In this historical romance, a Scottish earl's daughter and a dashing Navy lieutenant meet at a masquerade—but they're each hiding some secrets . . .

"Readers craving history entwined with their romance (a la Outlander) will find everything they desire in Jarecki's latest. Scottish romance fans rejoice."—RT Book Reviews

She cannot resist the man behind the mask . . .

As the illegitimate daughter of a Scottish earl, Lady Magdalen Keith is not one to partake in lavish balls or other frivolities. Yet at her father's urging, she agrees to dance with the battle-weary officers at this year's holiday masquerade. It's practically her civic duty! But when one such officer—whose dashing good looks cannot be disguised by a mere mask—sweeps her off her feet and into his arms, the innocent lass can't help herself. Her lips are his for the taking.

But will he betray his country for a kiss? Navy lieutenant Aiden Murray has spent too many months at sea to be immune to the charms of this lovely beauty. Even after he returns to his ship, she lives in his dreams. But when he discovers Maddie's true identity—and learns that her father is accused of treason—will the brawny Scot risk his life to follow his heart?

"This book hit all the right notes for me: swoon-worthy hero (oh, so, swoon-worthy); a sympathetic and capable heroine; intrigue and action scenes (fast paced); witty dialogue and banter; and sensual love scenes that grow the relationship. An excellent read."—The Romance Dish

Misleading cover, OK story

First, the cover is so wrong. The dude is a sailor, a 21 year old virgin, not some 35 year old beefcake berzerker. Bad graphic, wrong photo.

I liked how sweet the H and H were on each other, both virgins and how it played out. It was ok, I'll keep it. It was my first of this author and narrator, I'll try the Guardian next.

Everything a highland romance should be.

Penelope Hardy does a marvelous job of performing this adventure. Lots of action and romance.

Another lovely story

Loved the book. An excellent story - the narrator was brilliant - I love Amy Jarecki’s books - not keen on male narrators

Outstanding!!!

Any additional comments?

Author Amy Jarecki pens an wildly exciting and thrilling Highland romance. Set in the period of Queen Ann and Prince George’s in England, one gets a taste of the politics, backstabbing, and drama of the queen’s court. At a time of extreme prejudice toward Scots, and with Queen Anne’s fears of plots against her life, this author takes the reader through a thrilling story of intrigue, deception, innocence, and rejection.
Lady Maggie lives her life ashamed by her illegitimate birth. When she arrives at the queen’s court to plead her father’s case of innocence, she endures rejection and humiliation.
Reunited with the devilishly handsome Commander Aidan Murray, Maggie wonders if he remembers the time they spent together at the masked ball a year ago. When Aidan finally gets a moment alone with Maggie, he wraps his arms around her and reassures her how he feels—he thought about her constantly while at sea.
As dangerous rumors about conspiracy against the crown threatens to destroy Maggie and her father, Aiden is forced to distance himself from Maggie for his own safety.
Left to protect herself, Maggie’s life is in jeopardy. But once Aiden realizes Maggie means more to him than anything else, he stops at nothing to help her.
This is a love conquers all story.

Narration: Penelope Hardy performs this story quite well. She moves in and out of characters voices effortlessly, as she brings written word to life.

I was spellbound

I never wanted it to end.
A tale of suspense and trials the H/H had to overcome was just the right amount of emotion.
I enjoyed the attraction they had to deal with and how they make everything work to create a wonderful story.

Candy

I was greatly bored with this story! It seemed very long and I wanted to slap the main woman character many times!

Story Dragged!

I have read previous books by this author and I may not be a typical reader but stories drag and heroine is naive and foolish in each one. There were so many places where the story could have dramatically improved in characterization and plots. Not a bad story but if you read a couple books a week, you will find this series more for quick beach read than a detailed story that will hold your interest. I listen on Audible and I was constantly backing it up the next morning because I drifted off to sleep before the next chapter was finished. I started skipping chapters just to get to the end.

Not Her Best!

While I often really enjoy Jarecki, I found myself slogging through this book. I freely admit that a large part of that may have to do with the narrator. A weaker than usual plot and the some over used words or turn of phrase bothered me. Glaring mispronunciations and inserting incorrect words plus a voice that, to me, was annoyingly shrill made this a book I will not repeat, forward or recommend.
