About this listen

A timeless treatise on what constitutes the Hindu way of life

Religion in India can appear to be a confusing tangle of myths, with many different gods and goddesses worshipped in countless forms. This complexity stems from a love of storytelling as much as anything else, but it is only the surface expression of Indian faith. Beneath can be found a system of unifying beliefs that have guided the lives of ordinary families for generations. Here, one of the most profound philosophers of India explains these and other related concepts intrinsic to the Hindu philosophy of life.

As an American woman who is a Vedanta student, this book was interesting for awhile until it started sounding dated and condescending. Be prepared for a long ramble in Chapter 4 about race, class and women that is pretty unacceptable from a 2019 Western viewpoint.

The renderer irritatingly pronounces most of the Indian words wrongly. This includes even the most basic ones. Sankara is pronounced as SankArA, brahman as brAhmaN all through. chandala as kandala. Even many English words are pronounced wrongly. Some part of the book make very good reading but I was disappointed by some content and views of S Radhakrishnan especially the last part of the book.
