About this listen

In this heart-pounding, claustrophobic thriller from the bestselling author of Safe House, financial strains force a couple to sell their beautiful home, but when a potential buyer refuses to leave, everything starts to spiral out of control. Perfect for fans of The Woman at the Window and The Last Thing He Told Me.

For two years Lucy and Sam renovated their beautiful Victorian home but spiraling debts are forcing them to sell. The agreement with their real estate agent is that they won’t be home for viewings, but when Lucy gets a voicemail saying the Agent is running late, she realizes she will have to show the prospective buyer around herself.

Suffering from extreme anxiety and claustrophobia, Lucy watches the stranger on their doorstep waiting to be let in; she wants to hide and pretend she’s not home, but then she thinks of Sam working at all hours to cover their bills, of how much they need this sale, and opens the door.

Lucy takes a breath and begins to show their house. He is well dressed, polite, and despite her unease everything goes well, until he starts acting strangely. Why is he asking increasingly intrusive questions about her and Sam’s relationship? Why is he trying to take photographs of her? And why does he disappear into the basement and then not answer her when she calls?

There is something very wrong with this stranger, and now he is refusing to leave…

Critic reviews

"Tense, taut, and terrifying. The House Hunt takes an everyday, knife-edge dilemma and turns it into the stuff of nightmares. Truly impossible to put down."—Chris Whitaker, New York Times Bestselling Author

"You can almost feel the walls closing in on you as you race through THE HOUSE HUNT! It’s intense and claustrophobic, a darkly creepy thriller that will have you looking over your shoulder long after finishing it."—Gilly Macmillan, New York Times Bestselling Author

"What a cleverly plotted and unputdownable thriller. The House Hunt is tense from the very first page with a gasp-out-loud moment that I never guessed. So pacy and addictive. Just brilliant!"—Claire Douglas, #1 Sunday Times Bestselling Author

I listen to an absurd amount of thriller books, and this one was a twisty ride I wasn’t expecting. Very well done. Highly recommend!

Most of the book jumped too quick between the Main Characters. It was less than a chapters worth, back and forth, back and forth. It drove me nuts.

Once they finally came together (somewhere in the 3h or less mark) and that stopped, it finally all clicked and was a good book.

I still think there could have been longer breaks between the character jumps, but for an on sale book I do recommend for someone wanting a twist.

The last three hours took it from a 3 star to 4.
it's was the ending I was hoping for.

This was a very good listen - good story, not too foreseeable. Good characters (and not too many) A good book while doing chores and also when quietly sitting on the couch. I will definitely check out the authors other books.

I was pleasantly surprised by this complexellent audiobook, especially after several disappointing listens lately. I stumbled upon it in the “Deals” section and am so glad I took the chance. C.M. Ewan is a brilliant author who knows how to create a gripping story. The narration by Tamaryn Payne and Christopher Bonwell is exceptional. They complement each other perfectly, bringing the characters to life with their seasoned vocals. The plot is captivating, and I was hooked from the beginning. The story follows Lucy and Sam, a couple attempting to sell their newly remodeled home. However, things take a dark turn when a potential buyer refuses to leave, and Lucy's personal issues are pushed to the limit. Ewan exquisitely builds tension and leaves us with a jaw-dropping ending I never saw coming, though it could have been shortened a smidge getting there. I thought I had the finale figured out. I was way off, not even close. The writing is superb and the characters are well-developed. The pairing of the narrators adds to the tension, making this a thriller and I will be searching for more by Ewan. Highly recommended? Indeed!
