Publisher's summary

Discover the electrifying new novel from New York Times best-selling author Michael Koryta, the "master" (Stephen King) of thriller writing, the story of two women fighting for their lives against an enigmatic killer.

Tara Beckley is a senior at idyllic Hammel College in Maine. As she drives to deliver a visiting professor to a conference, a horrific car accident kills the professor and leaves Tara in a vegetative state. At least, so her doctors think. In fact, she's a prisoner of locked-in syndrome: fully alert but unable to move a muscle. Trapped in her body, she learns that someone powerful wants her dead - but why? And what can she do, lying in a hospital bed, to stop them?

Abby Kaplan, an insurance investigator, is hired by the college to look in to Tara's case. A former stunt driver, Abby returned home after a disaster in Hollywood left an actor dead and her own reputation - and nerves - shattered. Despite the fog of trauma, she can tell that Tara's car crash was no accident. When she starts asking questions, things quickly spin out of control, leaving Abby on the run and a mysterious young hit man named Dax Blackwell hard on her heels.

Full of pulse-pounding tension, If She Wakes is a searing, breakneck thriller from the genre's "best of the best" (Michael Connelly).

Critic reviews

"It's a measure of how good this book is that the chilling, masterfully sustained suspense is only one of its standout achievements. Koryta never brushes off anyone's death; he makes you feel for the victims. The relationship between Tara and her sibling is beautifully nuanced, full of revealing details going back to their childhood. Koryta has never been better than with this knuckle-biting thriller." (Kirkus)

"Instantly gripping, with realistic action, a breath-snatching twist, and a few untied ends that hopefully signal a sequel." (Booklist)

"Adept at creating Hitchcockian moments, Koryta keeps the suspense high throughout." (Publisher's Weekly)

Michael Did it Again

I couldn't imagine how someone could make a good story out of a girl in a coma, but he did with a home run. Really good book.

this is a fast based, expertly read book. My first Michael Koryta book and I will be reading more as well as listening to Robert Petkoff who really brought the story alive.

Excellent thriller!

This excellent thriller features characters who develop more and more fully as the story progresses. The plot has several separate lines that tangle together in a believable way. One of the main characters has locked-in syndrome as a result of an accident at the beginning of the story. Her treatment and feelings add interest as well as a vehicle for story progress. Highly recommended for serious thriller readers!

Excellent book!

This is my first book by Mr Koryta and it was fabulous. The narrator’s accents were great as well, and he was so very talented. So scary, exciting and perceptive. Worth a read for everyone.

kept me up

this was a very good listening audio book. I didn't understand why for the good doctor. Wished I could have found out more on the kid. Does anyone know if there is a book on him from this author? I definitely will read or listen to more from this author and loved the narrator.

A suspense drama that deserves a BRAVO!

this is the second novel that i heard by Koryta. The first, The Cypress House and now this grab your attention and will hold you captive until the last word. the stories, characterizations, suspense, and humor are exceptional. And the reader, Peter Petkoff is pitch perfect! Koryta writes the kind of drama that movie and t.v. execs should be clamoring to produce. Koryta does not disappoint. well worth the credit. check him out

Better Than Expected

This was a sale book and I've learned not to expect a lot when listening to them. This book was an exception. Well written with excellent character development, the narrative held my interest all the way through. My one criticism, a minor one, was the existence of a hanging thread at the book's conclusion. I won't describe it as it might be considered a spoiler. The two antagonists in this novel were dripping evil, which enhanced the listen for me. There were four strong female characters, which should please listeners who hunger for that sort of thing. There were some plot elements that stretched credulity, such as the hidden camera and the audio bug, but such literary license is expected and tolerated. The narration was excellent and, in my opinion, the listen was an exceptional value. I'll listen to more of Koryta's work.

NONSTOP ACTION AND SUSPENSE!

I don’t understand the almost venomous reviews about the ending. The journey to that ending was fantastic. To me the ending could have been anything. It was the breathtaking suspense from chapter to chapter that kept me engaged. The ending might be considered anticlimactic but it didn’t affect the story. The narrator was excellent and the book was excellent.
