About this listen

Gregory Roarke—agent for the ultra-secret Icarus Group–has received a new assignment: locate a teleportation portal on a backwater colony world. But what should be an easy assignment leads to a string of murders, and a race against an alien enemy.

Gregory Roarke—former bounty hunter, former Trailblazer, current agent for the ultra-secret Icarus Group—has received a new assignment: locate a suspected but as-yet undiscovered teleportation portal on the backwater colony world of Alainn.

The rival Patth are also searching for the device, and have considerably more resources at their disposal. Fortunately, Roarke has Selene and her incredibly sensitive Kadolian sense of smell. On paper, it should be a straightforward enough job.

But that was before there was a murder in the small town of Bilswift . . . and another one . . . and the discovery that the Patth are already on the scene and have narrowed the search to a heavily forested area in the hills and mountains east of town.

Most disturbing of all is the discovery that one of Selene’s people, a Kadolian teenaged boy named Tirano, is working at one of Bilswift’s fish markets. A boy who may have lost his parents before his proper socialization was completed. A boy who may be connected to both the murders and the Patth.

A boy who may be the potentially dangerous wild card that the Kadolians call changelings.

Another enjoyable story from Zahn. The low frequency audio was easier to hear in this book than others in the series, which is greatly appreciated.

Good story. Audio issues fixed!

if you made it this far the quarks of the story you already like it was a good side story and sets us up for even more fun in the universe.

the series is going more in a new direction, per Zahn's usual buildups. sorta reminds me of the rail series, this book is a good listen and sets up a lot for what's coming next.

a departure from the earlier books.

The best thing about this particular story was the talent of the narrator. Thompson does a fantastic job of creating voices with all of his readings. I have enjoyed the series up to this book. This one was a little weak in the story department . It was kind of like trying to fit a mystery novel into this sci-fi genre and storyline. Not my favorite.

Narrator is fantastic as always

There just needs to be so many more stories in the Spiral. I enjoyed every twist and turn and just can’t wait for the next story in this amazing saga! The tech … the characters … Roarke … perfect.

Another fantastic Spiral mystery!
