About this listen
From acclaimed short-fiction star Suzanne Palmer comes an action-packed sci-fi caper that launches a high-stakes space adventure trilogy.
Fergus Ferguson, repo-man, has one job: find the spacecraft Venetia's Sword and steal it back from Arum Gilger, ex-nobleman turned power-hungry trade boss. Finding Gilger in the farthest corner of human-inhabited space, a gas-giant harvesting colony called Cernee, was easy. The hard part will be getting past a field of space mines, hacking into the Sword's compromised AI, and fighting a crew of hostile enemies to take control of the ship.
But when a cable car explosion launches Cernee into a civil war, Fergus finds himself caught in the crosshairs. Repossessing the Sword requires him to side with Gilger's enemies, risk death, and get abducted by aliens. Fergus must learn to set aside his pride - and confront a past he's been running from his whole life - in order to take back the Sword and simultaneously save Cernee from destruction.

Story
From the moment Sam Newman and fourteen others awaken inside metal coffins next to the burning wreckage of a spacecraft, they face a constant struggle to stay alive on a seemingly uninhabited planet light-years from home. Worse, the last any of them remember, they were back home on Earth—at a time when interstellar travel was little more than a distant pipe dream. Survival means finding out who-or what-brought them to this place. Yet what few answers they find amidst the steaming jungles and the ruins of that distant world defy all logic or sanity.

Story
John Perry did two things on his 75th birthday. First he visited his wife's grave. Then he joined the army. The good news is that humanity finally made it into interstellar space. The bad news is that planets fit to live on are scarce—and alien races willing to fight us for them are common. So: we fight. To defend Earth, and to stake our own claim to planetary real estate. Far from Earth, the war has been going on for decades: brutal, bloody, unyielding. Earth itself is a backwater.

Story
In the 25th century, humans have conquered space. The advent of faster-than-light travel has opened up hundreds of habitable planets for colonization, and humans have exploited the virtually limitless space and resources for hundreds of years with impunity. So complacent have they become with the overabundance that armed conflict is a thing of the past, and their machines of war are obsolete and decrepit. What would happen if they were suddenly threatened by a terrifying new enemy?

Our universe is ruled by physics, and faster-than-light travel is not possible - until the discovery of The Flow, an extradimensional field we can access at certain points in space-time that transports us to other worlds, around other stars. Humanity flows away from Earth, into space, and in time forgets our home world and creates a new empire, the Interdependency, whose ethos requires that no one human outpost can survive without the others. It's a hedge against interstellar war - and a system of control for the rulers of the empire.

Critic reviews
"It has been a long time since I enjoyed an SF novel this much. Finder is a raucous good time! Suzanne Palmer's Fergus Ferguson is charming, imperfect, always in trouble, and a most resourceful rogue. I can't wait for his next adventure. Characterization at its finest. Firecracker dialogue. Suzanne Palmer had me hooked, charmed, and howling with delight by the end of the first act. Finder is a marvelous first novel. Bravo all the way around." (W. Michael Gear, New York Times best-selling author of Outpost)

But Sassy turned out to be a little different from your typical slave girl. Maybe it was her unusual physical strength. Maybe it was her friendship with the captured Fleet crewman. Maybe it was her spirit. Whatever it was, it wouldn’t let her resign herself to the life of a slave. She bided her time, watched for her moment. Finally it came, and she escaped. character interactions extremely draining
Is a good concept for a science fiction story along with pretty decent story structure but I couldn't get over the interaction between the characters as their dialogue and interactions were so overly dramatic and nonsensical that you started to dislike all of the characters except for the dead one

Worthy of awards, this remarkable tale is reminiscent of the great space stories. Balanced in its’ telling, self-contained, and with a good pace for a fairly long work, Finder will appeal to any SF reader. I will look for more work by this author.

Fergus Ferguson is the walking definition of a pyrrhic victory. That boy can't get out of a scrap without breaking half the bones in his body to save his life [literally].
Also, I believe I need a short story about the Shielders, they are AWESOME.
Overall a very good listen and definitely enjoyable. The kind of scifi you could easily read while traveling or working.

meh 😼
This is an ok book. The relationships between the characters is really well done. The snarky comments that attempt to hide their true respect and loyalty are sharp yet funny and poignant. The creative ways they find to get themselves into and out of trouble is always creative, but also often cringeworthy. My issue with this book is that it jumps around in time and location. It was difficult to keep up with where and when they were.

Good story, interesting characters 🤔
This was my first book by Suzanne Palmer. The story was very good and had a unique premise that's not as cookie cutter as what most authors are producing.
If you're tired of the same old story told another way this story is very good and I'm interested in seeing what direction she takes it. The potential is endless!
