About this listen

From bestselling author Hannah Beckerman comes a moving story about memory, secrets, and what it really means to feel that you’re one of the family.

“WONDERFUL. I read [it] in one gulp.” - Marian Keyes

“I LOVED this book and will be recommending it to everyone.” - Ruth Jones

“Hannah Beckerman is the real deal.” - Alex Michaelides

When Nell’s father makes a deathbed declaration that hints at a long-held secret, it reignites feelings of isolation that have plagued her for years. Her suspicions about the family’s past only deepen when her mother, Annie, who is losing her memories to dementia, starts making cryptic comments of her own.

Thirty-five years earlier, Annie’s life was upended by a series of traumas - one shock after another that she buried deep in her heart. The decisions she made at the time were motivated by love, but she knew even then that nobody could ever understand - let alone forgive - what she did.

As the two women’s stories unravel, a generation apart, Nell finally discovers the devastating truth about her mother’s past, and her own.

In this beautifully observed and emotionally powerful story of identity, memory and the nature of family, Hannah Beckerman asks: To what lengths would you go to protect the ones you love?

The premise was interesting. Unfortunately, the excruciatingly long descriptions of emotional turmoil and the exaggerated attempt to build suspense resulted in me skipping through a few chapters.

The narrator is very good and tried valiantly to make her performance match the desired level of suspense but there was only so much she could do.

This was a 5 star for me until the end. The book kept my attention and kept me wanting to know what would happen next, but then, in the end, there was so much talking to herself that I was jumping past to only be let down. There could have been so much more to the end and so much less getting there. My heart aches for Annie, and all she went through, I just can't even imagine. This definitely had all the feels!!

Great until the end!

You can feel the pain & torment of the characters. Interesting turn of events. The many monologues go on too long. The book could be a lot shorter & get the message across. For me the narrator was too dramatic. It was unsettling to listen to. The sisters could have been more developed and they were left out pretty much in the end.

Wow! You begin to have guess where the story is going and then suddenly you’re finding out new bits and pieces and your mind is on a new track. Enjoyed the story and the character development.

Hope that a second book is in the works so that we can see Nell’s future!

Talk about a page turner! The story is a common one although the author did not allow me to figure it out until the character did. A mystery for sure. I wish the ending could have been just a little longer to continue the happiness of the character but it was still satisfying.

MESMERIZING...

This book kept my attention, I was dying to know what happened. Unfortunately, getting there built up quite a lot of tension with no real satisfaction at the end. I saw it coming and knew it was going to end when I did and I was very unsatisfied. Otherwise, this would’ve been five stars all around, but I can’t get past the fact that it didn’t wrap up.

Hated the end loved the story

Overall I liked this story. But it was very painful to listen to. I suspect it was very important for the author to go into the deep level of detail but I could have happily lived without it and still enjoyed the story.

I just finished the Forgetting and that was so wonderful. This tried to build suspense in less effective ways and grew tiresome.

Hard to describe fairly
