About this listen

One of The New York Times best Fantasy novels of 2022!

"An utterly delightful epistolary romance...
. The Impossible Us is that rare 'I laughed, I cried' book."—The New York Times

Nick: Failed writer. Failed husband. Dog owner.

Bee: Serial dater. Dress maker. Pringles enthusiast.

One day, their paths cross over a misdirected email. The connection is instant, electric. They feel like they’ve known each other all their lives. So they decide to meet.

While Nick buys a new suit, and gets his courage up, Bee steps away from her desk, and sets off to meet him at a London train station. With their happily-ever-after nearly in hand, what happens next is incredible and threatens to separate them forever.

As their once in a lifetime connection is tested, Nick and Bee will discover whether being together is an impossible chance worth taking.

Critic reviews

"So funny, so original, so beautifully mad--I am seething with envy that I didn't write it myself. I adore rom coms like this, which push genre and achieve the impossible - leaving the reader not quite knowing how it's all going to end!"--Sophie Cousens, New York Times bestselling author of This Time Next Year

"Fun, heartbreaking, and eminently readable all at once. Bee and Nick’s emails are witty and romantic, while their supporting characters are entertaining in both worlds. Lotz manages to combine romance and science fiction into a book that will produce laughter and tears...A thought-provoking and clever genre-bending blend of romance and science fiction."--Kirkus (starred review)

“Lotz perfectly balances the heavy with the light, and creates a feeling of genuine connection between her protagonists. The eccentric side characters and strong humor meshes nicely with the earnest, tender romance. The result is simply delightful.”--Publishers Weekly (starred review)

Sci- fi/ romance mash-up

I loved this. Funny, sad, moving… the narrators were very good, the story interesting an d just complex enough. Very much enjoyed it!

Read rather than listen—good story, dreadful narration

The premise is excellent and the overall story was sweet and mind-bending and riveting. But the voice acting, oh my word. So bad. I couldn’t wait for it to end, particularly the actor reading Nick. He has worse rhythm than William Shatner, so stilted and halting at all the weirdest, wrong times, it felt like listening to a constipated train. I am so glad that’s over!!! Do yourself a favour and just read the book, I feel like this would’ve left a way better taste in my mouth.

Bitter sweet

Thus a love history and find it weirdly satisfying and I love the end, being so perfect. Enjoy !

Delightful.

Honestly, I picked this up as a sci-fi read from a brief NY Times positive mention and have been very pleased. While the background does have a touch of the sci-fi fantastic, this story is a witty love story. An almost hopelessly complicated one, almost. The characters are so real and conflicted, so much depth. The actors are fabulous; you want to have them over for dinner at your house. They obsess in very humorous but oh-so-human ways, and with ample helpings of humility and self-reflection that make you laugh a lot, knowingly. Without giving too much away, it has a bit of an "Unbearable Lightness of Being" feel about the choices we make in life, how trivial they can be and how much they can impact where we end up, who we love and how we feel about it. Highly recommended!

Love in the Multiverse

An extremely well written novel of parallel universes overlapping in cyberspace. Lots of love, sex, & intimacy across time & space, though ultimately sad. These characters will stay with me for a long time. Clearest message: genuine connection is the most important aspect of genuine love.

Yes! It worked! I was worried.

The book started out slowly, but it turned into a great story!

Love. This. Book.

Tried it out because Amal el Mohtar recommended it and have reread (relistened) many times since—a to go on blind, it unfolds beautifully, and all three performers are *excellent*

Unique, smart, funny

Went into this one expecting something completely different but was pleasantly surprised. The ending left me wanting more but in a good way!! A new (for me) author to follow. Both narrators did a superb job!!
