About this listen

#1 NATIONAL BESTSELLER

“The pages brim with tenderness and an appreciation for what we had and who we were. I could not have loved it more."—Ann Patchett

“One of the most moving and intelligent time travel novels I have ever read. Nostalgic, wise, funny, and filled with love."—Gabrielle Zevin

“The kind of book that will make you laugh, make you cry, and make you call the people you love. Exceptional."—Emily Henry

What if you could take a vacation to your past?

With her celebrated humor, insight, and heart, beloved New York Times bestseller Emma Straub offers her own twist on traditional time travel tropes and a different kind of love story.

On the eve of her fortieth birthday, Alice’s life isn’t terrible. She likes her job, even if it isn’t exactly the one she expected. She’s happy with her apartment, her romantic status, and her independence, and she adores her lifelong best friend. But her father is ailing, and it feels to her as if something is missing. When she wakes up the next morning, she finds herself back in 1996, reliving her sixteenth birthday. But it isn’t just her adolescent body that shocks her, or seeing her high school crush—it’s her dad, the vital, charming, forty-something version of her father with whom she is reunited. Now armed with a new perspective on her own life and his, some past events take on new meaning. Is there anything that she would change if she could?

Critic reviews

"Marin Ireland offers an adroit and heartfelt performance of Emma Straub's clever new novel, which repurposes the time-travel trope to explore what makes life meaningful.... Add her gifts for characterization and mimicry, which channel teenagers and adults to marvelous effect, and you have addictive listening." (AudioFile)

“What if you could go back in time to be with your elderly dying parent when they were young and healthy? Emma Straub turns this question into reality in her fifth and delightful novel. . . How do we talk with each other about things that really matter?. . .Straub is wise enough to know that despite having ample time, it’s never enough.”—Boston Globe

“Even if the premise of This Time Tomorrow is a flight from realism, the scope of Alice’s concerns is human-scale and plausible. . .although her travels through time allow her to reconsider her romantic history, the person whose past she is most eager to set right is her father, a man whose imminent mortality deepens the novel’s ambient nostalgia into something pressing and poignant.”—The New York Times

“If you could be 16 again, would you? Emma Straub, the queen of the smart-girl summer read, takes that question literally in her light-footed latest about a Manhattanite… a breezy but surprisingly poignant meditation on romance, regret, and family.”Entertainment Weekly

I read this because someone recommended it

I listened to the audible version of this book.

Good: the author as found their writing voice and style.

Bad: I was hoping once the time traveling FINALLY started half way through the book, it would get better. It did not. Did I mention I was a teen in the 90’s too? Yet I was struggling to sink into the story.
Ugly: I really wanted to like this book because I love all things time travel, but, BUT I was bored.
Yes, it has a deeper meaning of life and grief but it was still lacking actual life. In the end, it was all just about a girl and her daddy issues.

Only just OK

A long time to get through an uninteresting plot. Maybe should be listed as sci-fi?

Love time travel

One of my favorite genes and so I was able to get into it. That being said, it was not particularly new or unique, just an easy summer read.

Good, sad story.,. of life.

I enjoy time travel stories. I heard the author on NPR, and decided I should give it a shot. It was really good, ironically enough so many things are relevant to oneself in the world, especially if you have loving family members and the thought of loss. Good job.

Fun, Thought provoking romp

Through the NYC of my youth which was really fun for me. (Jackson Hole! Lucy’s! Alice Underground!)

Straub’s turn of phrases saved this story from, as Leonard would say, going off the tracks. But, it still requires a lot of suspension of belief. Marin Ireland, as usual, did a wonderful job narrating (Despite the fact that Dilaudid is not pronounced “diluted”). She always brings it and makes any story better!

Loved it!

I'm 46, lost my mom in the last year to ovarian cancer, and I'm now my dad's main support system, so this book really resonated with me. I'm not typically a time traveler fan, but there is a lot of emotional depth to this book and it's so much more. I was sad when it ended. Very well done!

Couldn’t stop listening!

Loved this book. Time traveling is a popular theme in books and movies but the author acknowledges it and works that into the story. It is thought provoking, funny and sad- just like life. I really enjoyed the adventure and it kept me guessing.

Great

This is a wonderful story and wonderful narration. I would listen to the dictionary if Marin Ireland read it.

Wow. Just wow.

I’m usually a hard science fiction reader. But the premise of this story piqued my interest. Who doesn’t like a good time travel story? The author has done a fantastic job of writing about the plausibility and complexities of time travel while including just the right amount of reality and emotion.

The narrator, holy cow, I will now seek out her other performances because she brought this story to life in a way that is pretty much impossible to do in an audio book (IMHO).

This is a good story, a talented narrator, and a fantastic experience overall.

Thank you to everyone involved in this project. Well done.
