About this listen

An assassin haunted by his past. Two young refugees out of their depth and in need of his special talents.

John Milton is no stranger to the world's seedy underbelly. But when the former British secret service agent comes up against a ruthless human trafficking ring, he'll have to fight harder than ever to conquer the evil in his path.

After Milton meets a refugee who lost a sister to people smugglers, he travels through war-torn Libya and the murkiest parts of Italy and France to get the girl back. As enemies watch his every move, Milton confronts a group of Albanian pimps and smugglers so dangerous, they could easily make this mission his last.

David Thorpe is excellent Voice actor

The john Milton series is worth the read which goes without saying. Mark Dawson is a great writer. The audiobook is very well performed by David Thorpe. I travel a lot so it great to hear a good actor. One who is appropriate for the character too.

Another GREAT John Milton book.

These John Milton books are fantastic! Not sure which has been my favorite, but this one may be the best (I have listened to several). The narration is excellent as well. I highly recommend any one of this series and I don't even think it matters which one you listen to first. Love them all!!!

Not my favorite

Too many instances of prose that didn't move the story along. Had I read it I would have skipped those parts.

Pretty Decent Novel

The story was not as good as all of the previous ones, but still good nonetheless. I would recommend this to die hard fans of the John Milton series. Happy reading!

I'm hooked...

John Mlton is a great antihero. He's a good guy/bad guy that you root for every time. Can't wait for the next book in the series.

Another John Milton Triumph

What made the experience of listening to The Jungle the most enjoyable?

When you combine a well-crafted story with a masterful narrator you get this book. Mark Dawson simply knows how to weave a tale. David Thorpe is John Milton for me. Captivating read and performance.

What did you like best about this story?

John Milton's ever-increasing courage to take on the challenges of the day!

What does David Thorpe bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

As I said before, David Thorpe has created the living breathing presence of John Milton. If a movie is made of this series, I hope they find an actor who can emulate the vocal inflection and character that Thorpe has embedded in Milton.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Hahaha, this sounds funny in my head, but when Milton shoots #12, I am convinced of Milton's humanity. Of course, there's the part where Milton befriends the kid, but that's expected.

Any additional comments?

I tend to do most of my reading audibly for a number of reasons, not the least of which is a form of dyslexia. And with Dawson's stories read by David Thorpe, it's hard to find a better combination. But, Dawson writes so well that I am tempted to visually read all of his books, even having read them audibly. And, yes, I consider listening to an unabridged audible version as real reading!

Milton does it again

This is the 9th book in the John Milton series, 9 times of a great listen where Milton does not disappoint! After his years of being an assassin for his Government he now helps people that are in dire need of Going through the steps of AA he can’t really accomplish step 9 so he found a unique way of atoning for his past sins.

John Milton is back!

This novel is #9 in the John Milton series by British novelist Mark Dawson. In The Jungle the former British covert agent continues to deal with his twin demons of past unnecessary killings and addiction to alcohol. He deals with the demons by helping others in need and striving to live the AA steps. All of Mark Dawson's books in the John Milton series, the Beatrix Rose series, and the the new Isabella rose series are in my Audible library.

The Jungle was released in Kindle and print editions three months prior to the release in Audible format, so I had already read the book prior to the Audible release this week. Still listening to the novel was very worthwhile.

This book is about human trafficking as Milton helps reunite a man with his sister who was sold to members of an Albanian crime mob to become a prostitute in London. Of course Milton's intent is not only to recover the young woman but also to take down the mob by killing its leaders. As with all of Mark Dawson's books The Jungle includes intense suspense. I recommend this book, this series, and all of Mark Dawson's books to those who like espionage thrillers and suspense thrillers. I am not a big fan of narrator David Thorpe but he is better than adequate. Mark Deakins and Napoleon Ryan narrate others of Mark Dawson's novels and they do a superb job.

Long Way to Go

Not very interesting. Lots of travel and misery. Story not realistic. Not the best book Dawson has done.
