About this listen

Two kingdoms, ancient enemies, must stand alone against an implacable invader in the masterful conclusion of the Great God’s War epic from the New York Times bestselling author of the Chronicles of Thomas Covenant.

They are coming.

The kingdoms of Belleger and Amika had been fighting for generations. But then they learned of a terrible threat moving through them to destroy the Last Repository, an immense hidden library. To face this greater enemy, King Bifalt of Belleger and Queen Estie of Amika allied their lands and prepared for war.

They are at the door.

Now the time of preparation is over. Black ships and sorcery test the cannon that defend the Bay of Lights. Treachery and betrayal threaten the kingdoms. The priests of the Great God Rile sow dissent. And Estie rides for the Last Repository, desperate to enlist the help of their Magisters—and to understand the nature of her own magical gift.

They are here.

Bifalt hates sorcery as much as he loves Estie, and the discovery that she could become a Magister shatters him. But he must rally and fight. Belleger and Amika are all that stand between the Great God’s forces and his ultimate goal: the destruction of the Last Repository and its treasure of knowledge.

Another compelling story from Stephen R Donaldson. Wonderful characters embedded in a grand struggle for survival of people and land. Sad to hear it end.

Loved it.

I"be been a big fan of Stephen for many years, if you haven't read Lord Fouls Bane and the consequent series, you should. He is also brilliant at sci-fi, with The Gap series. I have read them multiple times. In this series, he creates another deep and complex world, with no weird frills or extraneous verbiage. It"s a serious and far-reaching adventure and very well worth the trip. After all, what if YOU were thrust into the role of hero? We all think we would be brave and awesome, but really, it is most likely we would be at best, reluctant characters in a play we might not want to be in.........

Donaldson at his best … the most fun I’ve had with a series since Morant’s Need. Bravo! Performed beautifully as well!

Fantastic

Stephan Donaldson novels are rare and far between and well worth the wait. At first it seemed to drag on. In fact I went back and listened to the last chapter of “The War Within”. That helped me recalibrate. As the story progressed, I was fully involved. I hated for it to end. But what an ending could be more perfect? I have been a Donaldson fan since Thomas Covenant. Sometimes he frustrates me with the melodrama. Then he ties it together in a way that makes you feel you are so personally involved and truly there in your mind. Also, Scott Brick delivers it.

Very Moving.

Typical of Donaldson. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Examines power, coercion and love in a very compelling and suspenseful story.

Outstanding work

A satisfying conclusion to the series. Much less time spent on the internal ruminations of the tortured characters.

Best of the series

I've loved this author since I was a child and stumbled across a copy of "The Power That Preserves" at my favorite used book store's St. Patrick's Day "any book with a green cover is $.50" sale. I'm enjoying his complex, immersive world and descriptive prose in this series, as I knew I would.

What I'm NOT enjoying is the narrator's weird cadence, bizarre inflection, and inability to give different voices to any of the characters. Wholly uninspired and disappointing.

Oh, and take a shot of your favorite adult beverage every time the word "nevertheless" is used. I really noticed this overuse of the word in the previous installments and now, perhaps because I've become overly cognizant of it, I can't unhear it and it's like chewing on tinfoil. Seriously, I know Mr. Donaldson has been at this longer than I've been alive but he should know better and so should his editor.

Stephen R Donalsdone is my favorite storyteller. I am deeply moved by the language at times. The way people speak in these stories is incredible. I highlight passages that i love in all of my hard cover books. Scott Brick makes these characters real and is truly awesome!

An epic story and incredible performance!

I liked the story, nevertheless the author has tried to see how many times he can use the word nevertheless in each book, nevertheless I continued to try and get through the series, nevertheless it is very hard for me to enjoy these books since Scott Brick uses the same 3 voices for every character, nevertheless I decided to try to keep listening, nevertheless I couldn't.
