About this listen

A ranger’s duty. The rotten heart of a king. Rebellion spilled from the blood of family.

Rew, the king’s ranger, accepted a role on the far edge of the realm to avoid the morass of intrigue and betrayal that bleeds from the heart of the kingdom. His only desire is to shoulder the burden he’s taken, to protect the village of Eastwatch, and to monitor the wilderness beyond.

When three youths are arrested for petty theft in the village and beg for his help, Rew’s oldest friend insists he take responsibility for them. By ties stronger than steel, Rew is forced onto a path he knows leads to chaos and death. Through a resurgence of monsters summoned in ages prior, war between the royal line, and back-stabbing treachery, the king’s ranger will battle to grant the youths a life he never had a chance of.

But as they venture farther from the wilderness he calls home, Rew can feel the magical pull at the center of the kingdom, demanding he return to face his past and his family’s terrible legacy. Only he knows the secret of the king, and the risk it poses to the entire realm.

The King’s Ranger is a classic fantasy adventure, perfect for fans of Michael J Sullivan, Brent Weeks, James Islington, and AC Cobble’s Benjamin Ashwood series.

The author is an artist who has weaved a credible series of events into a terrific adventure. I will definitely be looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

Excellent narration of an outstanding story

Breath of fresh air

The plot line is generally similar to high fantasy adventure stories, but there is good world building and creative plot devices to keep the story interesting. The narration is good, creating a smooth flow to the story line. Characters have little depth but are likeable. it is worth your time.

The book is well written. However there are other issues for me.

Some of the characters are very appealing. Others are definitely not. The nobles are not at all appealing, they are thoughtless and self absorbed. There are very few characters who are likable. The likability or level of interest seems the primary criteria for how quickly a character will die off. Stupidity means they will stick around.

The MC foolishly seems to do what these unappealingly spoiled characters want. Personally, I wonder he doesn't just let these mostly strangers just dash off and suffer the fate they bring on themselves. It is nice when a book can make you care about entirely fictitious happenings. But, I just didn't like any of the young people. I was outraged when the Ranger didn't extricate himself when he saw how awful they were. Especially after one of them got a second ranger killed. Like Rew said, run! Too bad he didn't take his own advice.

I love Simon Vance as a narrator, he reads so very well. I actually enjoyed listening to the story. Yet, I doubt I will listen to the next book. I don't care about what is going to happen to those people.

Spoilers. difficult to review...

Rew takes on a LOT of dark magic, political intrigue, betrayals and monsters. As one of the King's Rangers, he has low magic but knows how to use it. His rag-tag team needs him to save kingdom against long odds. Well-developed characters and a well-built world, along with excellent narration, bring the story line to life.

If you loved the character strider then you will enjoy this story. Somewhat original, but mostly just good tried and true story telling. Well done.
