About this listen

Eight classic tales by Chekhov come alive through the gentle yet powerful reading of Richard Setlok. "The Kiss", the story of an awkward young soldier who receives a kiss by mistake, leads off the collection, which also includes "Not Wanted", "Anyuta", "A Misfortune", "Expensive Lessons", "The Head of the Family", "The Trousseau", and "The Helpmate". It's a must for Chekhov lovers and a perfect introduction for those who have never experienced the work of this Russian literary great.

Critic reviews

"Setlok brings to [these stories] that delicate balance of humor and pathos that is essential to Chekhov's style, while at the same time conveying...the elusive dimension of poetry that is often overlooked in readings of [Chekhov]." ( Library Journal)

My last Chekhov

Would you consider the audio edition of The Kiss to be better than the print version?

I read 'The Apple Orchard ' as required reading in Literature in 1965 FSU. I am reminded of his greatness in 2016. S. Maugham praises Chekhov in V-II Short stories East To West as a mentor in his writings which prompted me to read this current book hereof referred.

Unacceptable sound quality

The story is great. And the narration is decent. The problem with this audiobook is with the sound quality. The product sounds as if it was pulled from an old audio tape with such negligence that the producers failed to apply a minute worth of work to the final product.
