About this listen

For decades — in China and in San Francisco — Winnie Louie and Helen Kwong have kept each other's confidences, but those secrets are about to be revealed. Convinced that she is dying, Helen decides to celebrate the Chinese New Year by unburdening herself of hidden truths — not only hers, but those of Winnie and of Winnie's daughter, Pearl. So begins a series of comic misunderstandings and heartbreaking realizations about luck, loss, and trust — about the things a mother cannot tell her daughter, about the secret that daughters keep, and about the miraculous resiliency of love.

Classic Amy Tan!

A deeper look into the relationship between mother and daughter by the GOAT, Amy Tan.
Pearl is over 40, married, and a mother of two. Her mother, Winnie, immigrated from China when she was a young woman and made a fresh start for herself in California. But things are never as simple as they sound, and Winnie has a past that is shrouded in mystery.
Thanks to her best friend Helen, Winnie is forced to finally sit down with her adult daughter and tell her a story that will bring them closer than ever before.

Narration 10/10
Story 10/10
Food descriptions 10/10 (also, yummy)

I LLOOVVEE ALL BOOKS AMY TAN

I own every Amy Tan book and have listened to all of them at least three times each (most are incredibly long... like Valley of Amazement.) No matter how long though, everytime I feel the end coming and then it's over, a bit of my heart cries out to have to return to my life. Thank you Mrs. Tan, for sending me into another world, one in which always makes me appreciate how lucky I am and how much people have endured throughout time. Their are some truly gifted writers out there, and then there is Any Tan 😊. (I also enjoy Lisa See, they remind me if each other in many ways.)

Excellent !

This book is very good! I did feel sad for the main character, in all that she had to put up with and to not have family and friends who didn’t stand up for her in her earlier life . But I was happy that she had a happy life after all her hardships!
Very good narration. She did a excellent job with her voices !

Loved this book! A true treasure!

Would you consider the audio edition of The Kitchen God's Wife to be better than the print version?

I haven't read the print version of this book so I cannot compare.

What did you like best about this story?

The beautiful writing, the lessons of life and the sacred and complicated relationship between mother and daughter.

What does Gwendoline Yeo bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Gwendoline Yeo brings The Kitchen God's Wife to life! She is an amazing storyteller, weaving in and out of characters flawlessly, luring me into the story until I was so deeply into it that I did not want it to end.

If you could take any character from The Kitchen God's Wife out to dinner, who would it be and why?

I think I would go out with Auntie Du. I would love to hear about her own life's journey and to especially just listen to her melodic voice (as narrated by Gwendoline Yeo).

Any additional comments?

My favorite book in a long time!
